The biomechanical effects and perceived comfort of textile-fabricated insoles during straight line walking

Abstract: Insoles with different arrangements of spacer fabrics allow changes in pressure patterns across the plantar foot and perception of comfort while walking. The findings enhance current understanding on the use of textile-fabricated materials, which provide alternative solutions for modifying insoles. Clinical relevance The key features of spacer fabric offer a viable option for different orthotic insole applications. The results will greatly contribute toward insole prescription, potentially enhancing the effica… Show more

“…Previously, EVA has been applied in flexible electrical devices, such as spray-coated conductive films for solar cell electrodes [32], spin-coated transparent electrodes [33], screen-printed conductors for paper-based electronics [34], and a dip-coated conductive membrane for energy storage [35]. This environmentally friendly copolymer is also widely used in food packaging, as an encapsulation material for flexible photovoltaic devices [36], as a hot-melt adhesive [37], and as a flexible adhesive layer between textile insole pads [38]. EVA is soluble in organic solvents, including xylene [33], butyl acetate [32], toluene [39], and chlorobenzene [29].…”

“…Spacer fabrics are 3D knitted fabrics known for their superior properties, such as good air and moisture permeabilities, cushioning performance, shock resistance, and pressure distribution, and ability to prevent ulcerations in clinical applications. [11][12][13] Their unique properties mean that spacer fabrics can be used for a wide range of products, for example, thermal insulated clothing, 14 mattresses, 15,16 protective clothing, 17 insoles 18,19 and wound dressings. 20 Nevertheless, there are also some limitations of spacer fabrics and concerns around their use in insole applications.…”

“…Comfortable textile has attracted increasing attention to provide a microenvironment for the human body in humidity and temperature. Clothing comfort, including thermal and wet comfort, plays a pivotal role in keeping normal human functioning, and any failure to maintain this significant performance would result in severe medical emergencies. Generally, a traditional fabric composed of natural fibers and synthetic fibers can rapidly absorb the moisture on humans and evaporate it subsequently .…”
