The augmented Van Gogh's: Augmented reality experiences for museum visitors

Abstract: To mark the completion of the restoration of Van Gogh's painting 'The Bedroom', and as part of the Friday Evening events organised by the Van Gogh Museum, the AR Lab was asked to develop three installations dedicated to the exhibition 'Paul Gauguin: The Breakthrough into Modernity'. With these installations we aimed to make it possible for visitors to discover paintings by Van Gogh in a playful and exciting way. One of the installations features the painting 'The Bedroom' which is shown on a large screen, and … Show more

“…Table 1 shows result of testing cases which concluded 80 percent of the test are high and 20 percent of the test are an average so that it is suitable for preserving cultural heritage as done by [6] and [11]. The successful percentage rates gives a significant values and contribution on implementing augmented object on multiple markers instead on [3]- [5], [8] and [9] which uses single marker with augmented objects. The use of multiple markers would give benefit on user interaction experiences while using different markers at the same moment.…”

“…Each phase must be finished before conducting the next phase of the cycle. Kolstee and Eck [8] described the use of augmented reality in the advertisement area, it discussed the portability and easiness of using a mobile device which is a smart phone for augmented reality. It shows how the augmented reality is implemented on an advertisement of a restaurant which share product information, booking details, and 3D layout.…”

“…AR has also been exploited in many approaches to presenting digital contents, e.g. advertising [14], museum interaction experiences [9,16,17,18] e-commerce [8] and many other scenarios [3,4,19]. AR has been an extensive augmenting tool that enhances a user's experience of perceptions in real time; especially in mobile indoor AR such as those concerning interactive graphic AR applications and mobile outdoor platforms, such as location based AR.…”

“…The mobile AR application, 'Taking the Artwork Home', developed during this research is currently focused on paintings and photographs and other research has considered AR in this context to view artworks [4], create artworks [6], and even provide alternate infrared or ultra-violet [4,8] views of a painting. However, whilst this previous research has been technologically driven, or only addresses the end user, in this research we adopted a research for design approach with a range of stakeholders where we adhere to Sir Christopher Frayling's definition of research through design in that we are reflecting on the process to recommend what is both desirable and productive for future practice.…”
