BackgroundThe neighborhood environment, as a determinant of walking, has been assessed in several developed countries. However, few studies have investigated these associations in Chinese populations.ObjectiveTo examine the association between the perceived neighborhood environment and walking for recreation or transportation purposes among Chinese community residents.MethodsWe used a multi-stage stratified random sampling design to conduct a cross-sectional study of 1528 Chinese adults in Shanghai. Environmental and walking variables were assessed using a revised Abbreviated Neighborhood Environment Walkability Scale for Chinese subjects and a long version of International Physical Activity Questionnaire. Self-reported demographic variables including gender, age, employment status, and location of community were also collected. Multiple logistic regression analysis was applied to examine the association between the neighborhood environment and walking.ResultsBased on the results of IPAQ, 13.7% of the overall subjects were physical inactive, which was considered to be lowly active. For all participants, accessibility to services was significantly associated with walking for both recreation and transportation (odds ratio = 1.062, 95% confidence interval: 1.016, 1.110; odds ratio = 1.053; 95% confidence interval: 1.008, 1.100, respectively). In males, accessibility to services was significantly associated both with walking for recreation and walking for transportation. However, a significantly negative association was found between the neighborhood surroundings and walking for recreation. In contrast, females who perceived good traffic safety tended to walk for recreation. Data also revealed a difference between working and retired individuals. Among working participants, perceived environmental variables were not significantly associated with walking for recreation and transportation.ConclusionsThe association between neighborhood environment and walking varied depending on the reason for walking and the characteristics of the participants. Our findings suggest that interventions to promote walking in community residents should include improving the neighborhood environment, particularly accessibility to services such as building more stores, parks, and public transit facilities.

The process of urbanization observed in recent decades has brought with it some consequences for the quality of life and change in the profile of diseases, which are related to higher rates of physical inactivity. The lack of sufficient physical activity (PA) is currently being considered as a risk factor for diseases and comorbidities, especially in adult populations. Thus, the aim of the present study was to systematically review the scientific findings in the literature on the practice of physical activity among adults and its relation to the perception of safety in urban centers, published between 2005 and 2014. The search process was conducted using the PubMed, MedLine and LILACS databases, and the reference lists of selected articles used the following key words: "physical activity", "violence" and "safety". Initially, 303 articles related to the subject under study were found. However, after analyses and the establishment of inclusion criteria, 13 articles were included in this review. It was concluded that the reduction in crime and improvement in traffic and in the environment for walking are key factors to perceive safety in a district. Despite the evidence showing that traffic safety, adequate lighting and improvements in the aesthetics of districts contribute to the perception of safety, the results are yet inconclusive.

O objetivo do estudo foi investigar a relação entre características de vizinhança e a prática de atividade Física em adultos, por meio de revisão sistemática. Foram utilizadas as bases de dados Scopus, Web of Science e Pubmed, acessadas em fevereiro de 2013, com os seguintes descritores ("Residence Characteristics"[Mesh] OR Neighborhood [all field]) AND ("Sedentary Lifestyle"[Mesh] OR Physical activity [all fields] OR Motor activity [Mesh]) na base Pubmed e nos demais sintaxes correspondentes. Na busca inicial, foram encontrados 5779 (sendo 2257 duplicatas). Após análise e aplicação de critérios de inclusão 19 artigos fizeram parte da revisão. O principal instrumento utilizado para mensurar a atividade física foi o IPAQ (16 artigos). Em relação aos questionários para mensurar percepção de vizinhança foram identificados 5 instrumentos diferentes. A análise da associação entre atividade física e características de vizinhança apontou diversas inconsistências. Independentemente do instrumento utilizado, ao analisar apenas o constructo de cada característica de vizinhança, os resultados dos estudos foram divergentes ou inconsistentes, não indicando ainda uma sólida relação entre as características de vizinhança e a prática de atividade física. A diversidade de populações e metodologias para mensuração de características de vizinhança podem ser um dos motivos das diferenças apontadas. Este estudo aponta uma lacuna importante nos estudos de associação entre a prática de atividade física e características de vizinhança. O não uso de análises multinível nos estudos analisados pode ser apontado como um motivo para as associações não significativas ou inconsistências encontradas entre os estudos.

Abstract: Our findings suggest that the perceived environment is important to promote both MVPA and walking in rural and urban areas. To better understand environmental correlates in rural structures, we particularly need more specific studies.
