The Aspects of Spatial Cognitive Mapping in Persons with Visual Impairment

Abstract: Spatial mental mapping in an individual with visual impairment can be viewed from several perspectives, as in the case of a person regarded as a bio-psycho-socio-spiritual being. We speak of mental/cognitive mapping in terms of training spatial orientation and mobility on the one hand and psychology of persons with visual impairment, i.e. the process of development of a mental map, on the other hand. An important role is undoubtedly played by lower and higher compensatory functions. Hearing, touch, and partly … Show more

“…Similarly, sound perception refers to auditory sensation in ISO's soundscape framework in this study. Since blind people use known information to form mental maps [83] to support action [13,84,85] and hearing is involved in the perception, processing, and evaluation of information along with mental processes [86]; the soundscape memories forming during this mental process become part of the interpretation of auditory sensation. Furthermore, they are influential factors in the soundscape perception of blind older adults along with the sound context.…”

“…The requirements considered in our research are listed in Appendix 5. Obtaining information from the surroundings is considered as one of the most important requirements for the assistive solutions for VI/blind users, because it helps them to create a more accurate mental map of the environment [17]. Therefore, the capability of computer vision technologies to analyze and understand a scene has been considered as the core of our mapping study.…”

“…Schinazi and Majerova’s study [54,55] indicated that BVI people face difficulties in spatial perception and imagination, especially in performing dead reckoning in strange places. An advanced level of design seeks an orientation guidance that provides a convenient way to train and strengthen the spatial perception of BVI people.…”
