Recent trends in computer vision-driven scene understanding for VI/blind users: a systematic mapping

Abstract: During the past years, the development of assistive technologies for visually impaired (VI)/blind people has helped address various challenges in their lives by providing services such as obstacle detection, indoor/outdoor navigation, scene description, text reading, facial recognition and so on. This systematic mapping review is mainly focused on the scene understanding aspect (e.g., object recognition and obstacle detection) of assistive solutions. It provides guidance for researchers in this field to unders… Show more

“…This allows visually impaired individuals to engage with and navigate their surroundings. By combining image recognition, object detection, and scene analysis, AI-enabled applications deliver real-time environmental descriptions, identify obstacles, and support autonomous navigation (Bharath, 2022;Patthanajitsilp and Chongstitvatana, 2022;Yang et al, 2022;Valipoor and de Antonio, 2023). This recent visual understanding empowers individuals to independently move through spaces, identify objects, and engage with their surroundings in ways that were previously inaccessible.…”

“…Clinical specialists can train and guide visually impaired patients on how to use the device effectively. Smart glasses such as eSight can be an alternative to costly and complicated eye procedures and treatments for visually impaired individuals, supporting them at work, in study, and day-to-day life [6] [7].…”

“…A mental model refers to the outcome of the cognitive process of constructing visual impressions based on sensory input from the surroundings (Masal et al, 2023). The act of creating a mental representation is often known as "visualizing", "mentally perceiving", "auditory imagination", "imagining tactile sensations", and so on (Valipoor and De Antonio, 2023). In order to form a mental model, a person engages in cognitive processes such as simulations, reproductions, or reconstructions of previous perceptual encounters or the anticipation of future ones.…”
