The Antibacterial Efficacy of Biopure MTAD in Root Canal Contaminated with Enterococcus faecalis

Abstract: Aim. The purpose of this in vitro study was to assess the antimicrobial efficacy of Biopure MTAD against E. faecalis in contaminated root canals. Materials and Methods. Forty-two single rooted extracted human teeth were inoculated with E. faecalis and incubated for four weeks. The samples were divided in two control and five experimental groups irrigated with 1.5% sodium hypochlorite solution (NaOCl); 3% NaOCl; BioPure MTAD; 1.5% NaOCl/17% EDTA; or 3% NaOCl/17% EDTA. After a one-week incubation, complete disin… Show more

“…That's why it is considered one of the most resistant bacteria in necrotic teeth, and its persistence causes the failure of the root canal treatment. And it requires different visits and using intracanal medications in-between visits to eradicate this bacteria from the root canal, So it is very important to find an irrigating solution which has a strong bactericidal effect of getting rid of bacteria and improve the success rate of root canal treatment of necrotic teeth [3].…”

“…15 A new irrigant solution, MTAD, 13 containing a mixture of 3% doxycycline, 4, 25% citric acid and a detergent (0.5% Polysorbate 80) 16 was also introduced and some studies suggest that MTAD has a potent antibacterial effect against E. faecalis. 17,18 MTAD presents an acidic condition (ph = 2.15), which could explain the changes on the structure of the dentinal tubules, helping its diffusion through them. 19 After these considerations, the aim of this study was to create an innovative intracanal dressing gels based on the formulation of MTAD containing doxycycline, along with another one containing chlorhexidine, to compare their ability to eliminate E. faecalis from root canals.…”
