The Anti-Cancer Activity of Noscapine: A Review

Abstract: Noscapine is an isoqiunoline alkaloid found in opium latex. Unlike most other alkaloids obtained from opium latex, noscapine is not sedative and has been used as antitussive drug in various countries. Recently, it has been introduced as an anti-mitotic agent. This drug can be used orally. When the resistance to other anti-cancer drugs such as paclitaxel manifests, noscapine might be effective. Therefore, noscapine and its analogs have great potential as novel anti-cancer agents.

“…Current studies show that alkaloids obtained from Papaver species could not only be used as analgesic or sedative but also in other areas such as cancer treatment [12]. P. somniferum L. alkaloids that show promise in cancer treatment include noscapine, which interacts with α-tubulin and has anticancer and antiangiogenetic properties [13,14]; codeinone, an oxidative product of codeine which has apoptotic effects through fragmentation of DNA [15]; morphine, which shows anticancer activities by inhibiting NF-κB; and (-)-3-acetyl-6β-(acetylthio)-N-(cyclopropyl-methyl)-normorphine (KT-90), a derivative of morphine [16]. To the best of our knowledge, pharmacological effects of P. somniferum L. extracts on HT29, HeLa, C6 cancer cell lines and Vero normal cell lines have not been investigated in detail.…”

“…1), a nonaddictive phthalideisoquinoline alkaloid obtained from opium poppy latex, has been broadly recognized as a safe and promising oral antitussive agent . Recently, noscapine has shown antiproliferative activity against a wide variety of tumor cell types (Mahmoudian and Rahimi-Moghaddam, 2009). Pretreatment with oral noscapine was also proven to limit lymphatic metastasis of human prostate cancer PC3 cells in nude mouse models (Barken et al, 2010).…”
