“…Azaarenes such as 9-acridine and quinoline, however, have been detected in aqueous environment in previous studies. 24,25 This work clearly showed that an effect-directed analysis approach is a powerful tool to identify unknown chemicals in a complex environmental mixture which may cause biological effects. In this work, we revealed chemicals in soil with previously undocumented effects on vertebrate development, namely 9-methylacridine, 4-azapyrene, and 2-phenylquinoline, and 11H-benzo[b]fluorene.…”

“…Instead, organic compounds which are typical of modern, urban waste water were identified (45)(46)(47)(48). It is possible that, in this case, the degradation and dissolution of any original residues in the pottery by the constant wet and dry cycles in the burial environmnent allowed the ingress of organic material from the ground water during the wetter cycles.…”

“…In the Rhine water samples we identified in detail tonalide, galaxolide and 4-oxoisophorone (fragrances), carbamazepine, clofibric acid and mephobarbital (pharmaceuticals), DEET (repellent), Mecoprop and isoproturon (pesticide), TAED (bleach activator in washing agents), 4-methoxycinnamic acid 2-ethylhexyl ester (UV-protector) as well as caffeine (food constituent). With one exception the occurrence of these compounds in riverine systems is reported sporadically , Heberer et al 1999b, Öllers et al 2001, Buerge et al 2003, Dsikowitzky et al 2004a, but the sedative mephobarbital is still unnoticed as river water contaminant. The huge group of technical additives comprises on the one hand widely used polymer plasticizers and lubricants such as phosphates and phthalates, NBBS, TPDB and triethylcitrate.…”

“…The steady input of carbamazepine via effluents of sewage treatment plants (see Dsikowitzky et al, 2004a) causes its prevalent occurrence in the Lippe river. Increasing loads indicate that the input rate is generally higher than removal rate.…”
