The Aizoaceae-a new approach

Abstract: BITTRICH, V. & HARTMANN, H. E. K., 1988. The Aizoacea—a new approach. The history of the Aizoaceae Rudolphi in its various circumscriptions is reviewed, and the monophyly of the Aizoaceae sensu stricto after exclusion of Molluginaceae is demonstrated. A subdivision of the family and the relevant synapomorphic character expressions are discussed. Five subfamilies are recognized, namely the Aizooideae, the Aptenioideae Schwantes ex Bittrich & H. E. K. Hartrnann, the Ruschioideae Schwantes ex Bittrich & H. E. K. … Show more

“…Argyroderma is a genus of compact, perennial dwarf succulents that falls within the highly diverse arid-adapted subfamily, the Ruschioideae, in the family Aizoaceae (Bittrich and Hartmann 1988). Hartmann (1978) delimited 10 species in the genus Argyroderma, one of which has two subspecies (see Table 1 for names and Fig.…”

“…The highly specialized hygrochastic fruit capsules of the Ruschioideae, which only release their seed when wet, limit seed dispersal in space and spread it through time by effectively coupling dispersal and germination cues (Hartmann 1988;Parolin 2001). Limited seed dispersal in the highly dissected landscapes of the succulent karoo renders genetic drift a likely mechanism of divergence between populations (Ihlenfeldt 1994).…”

“…ex Bittrich & H. H artm . ) is characterized by coilomorphic nectaries, and Bittrich & Hartmann (1988) mention them as a synapomorphic character for the subfamily. It is also worth noting that in Aptenioideae the number of carpels agrees with the number of perianth lobes as well as with the num ber of nectaries.…”

“…O gênero inclui 12 espécies, com registros nas regiões tropicais e subtropicais de todo o mundo, geralmente associadas a ambientes salinos (Bittrich & Hartmann 1989;Hartmann 1993;Bittrich 2002). No Brasil, está representado por apenas uma espécie (Zappi 2010 Ervas perenes, suculentas, prostradas, ramos quadrangulares em seção transversal, sulcados.…”
