This study analyzes business performance through efficiency score estimation in two sustainable tourism models: cultural tourism and rural tourism. The study uses microeconomic data (microdata) of Spanish firms with different characteristics in terms of size, region, location and financial variables. Using multistage modeling (Data envelopment analysis, DEA, non-parametric frontier and non-parametric tests), the main results show that the average efficiency is higher for rural tourism destinations than for cultural tourism destinations. Similar to other tourism industries, efficiency results by geographical and regional destination confirm that location is a driver of the efficiency levels in rural and cultural tourism destinations. Furthermore, the results do not support the scale economies hypothesis: the average efficiency is higher for very small firms compared to other firm sizes, although the average efficiency for large firms is higher than that for medium-size firms. Regarding dynamic efficiency, the results reveal slight variations among the years examined, but the differences are not statistically significant. Finally, the study sheds light on the link between the efficiency of rural tourism and sustainable practices as the investment in environmental protection developed by regions during the period.

The system dynamics applied in this research on modeling a tourist destination (area) life cycle (TALC) contributes to understanding its behavior and the way that information feedback governs the use of feedback loops, delays and stocks and flows. On this basis, a system dynamic three-staged TALC model is conceptualized, with the number of visitors V as an indicator of the carrying capacities’ dynamics and the flow function V(t) to determine the TALC stages. In the first supply-dominance stage, the model indicated that arrivals are growing until the point of inflexion. After this point, arrivals continue growing (but with diminishing growth rates), indicating the beginning of the demand-dominance stage, ending up with the saturation point, i.e., the maximum number of visitors. The simulated TALC system dynamics model was then applied to five EU destinations (Living Labs) to explain their development along the observed period (2007–2019). The analysis revealed that all observed Living Labs reached the second lifecycle stage, with one entered as early as in 2015 and another in 2018. Lifecycle stage durations may significantly differ across the destinations, as do the policies used either to prevent stagnation or to restructure the offer to become more sustainable and resilient.

La pandemia causada por el COVID-19 ha llevado a tomar diversas medidas que puedan reducir la probabilidad de contagio; sin embargo, e independientemente de su efectividad, se han visto afectados varios sectores sociales y económicos, como el turístico. Esto ha sido particularmente complicado en poblaciones cuya principal actividad económica es el turismo. Este artículo pretende develar las implicaciones que han tenido las restricciones al turismo en un “pueblo mágico” de México, cuya población es principalmente originaria (masewal) y presenta altos niveles de marginación socioeconómica. A través de una metodología etnográfica basada en entrevistas no estructuradas, observación participante y observación natural, se evaluó la eficiencia e impacto de las decisiones tomadas por el ayuntamiento municipal para evitar los contagios por COVID-19 en Cuetzalan del Progreso. Los resultados muestran que las medidas no se cumplieron completamente debido a que las decisiones no se tomaron con la participación de los habitantes ni se tuvieron en consideración sus carencias económicas y su alta dependencia del turismo como medio de subsistencia. Por otro lado, las restricciones afectaron principalmente la economía de las personas más pobres, quienes dependen de sus labores diarias para obtener ingresos. A pesar de la situación, el municipio de Cuetzalan del Progreso se caracteriza por su resiliencia territorial, lo que se reflejó en el diseño de estrategias comunitarias para el fortalecimiento social.
