Purpose-The purpose of this paper is to empirically investigate residents' perceptions of social impacts from co-hosting the 2009 World Men's Handball Championship (WMHC09) in a small Croatian city-Split-in response to the need for social impacts research at a variety of sport tourism events and locations. Additional analysis was performed on a number of socio-demographic factors that may affect the magnitude of residents' perceptions. Design/methodology/approach-A quantitative methodology was employed using a convenience sampling method. A drop and mail-back technique with self-completed surveys was used. A total of 92 completed surveys were returned. Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to test for patterns of social impacts across demographic variables. Findings-Overall, respondents' perceived the social impacts from co-hosting WMHC09 as mostly positive. However, the majority of respondents believed that the public monies spent on a new arena construction should have been allocated to construct facilities for which there is a greater public need (healthcare centers, schools, etc.). Variations in respondents' perceptions generally could not be explained by their socio-demographic characteristics. Practical implications-Any future decisions to use public monies for one-time financially intensive events should perhaps be subjected to a decision by a popular vote. Originality/value-This is one of the few studies to examine the residents' perceptions of the social impacts of sport tourism events in transition countries. It also extends social exchange theory and reports validity and reliability of the social impacts scale.
Purpose -Creative economy leverages creativity, technology, culture and innovation in fostering inclusive and sustained economic growth and development (UNCTAD, 2015). The relationship between film as a part of creative economy and tourism industry, recently coined to a new phenomenon named film tourism, are multifold. Starting from this premise, this paper aims to:(1) give a theoretical framework of the creative economy and film industry as its constituent; (2) explain their trends and impacts on the global economy; (3) explain the concept of film tourism and its impacts on the local economy; (4) give a review of the film tourism state of art in Croatia; and (5) propose policy measures so as to enhance the effects of film tourism in Croatia. Methodology -After having elaborated the theoretical framework of the creative economy in general, there follows the analysis of interconnectedness between film and tourism industry. The conceptual model is being introduced in order to elaborate multiple relations between the two concepts after which the review of available facts for the case of Croatia was given. Findings -This paper primarily focuses on analysis of film industry and its contribution to the growth of tourism industry, with Croatia as an object of research. Contribution -Relations between film and tourism industry will be shown through specific theoretical model. Its empirical contribution lies in providing comprehensive analysis of the multiple effects of these interrelations. Practical contribution is about to be achieved by a number of policy proposals aimed at utilizing Croatian resources by way of film tourism industry.
The protected natural areas are becoming increasingly popular vacation destinations with both international and domestic travellers. Protected area may be an area of land and/or sea dedicated to the protection and maintenance of biological diversity, and of natural and associated cultural resources, and managed through legal or other means. It might have many different purposes. This means that biodiversity protection, though a critically important function is far from being the only purpose and is often not the primary purpose of many protected areas. As an ever-growing activity, tourism in protected areas produces benefits and cost that often interact in complex ways. Therefore, it is obvious that special attention has to be paid to the protected areas governance model and its effectiveness, especially in terms of the planning and control process enhancement for the purpose of avoiding possible conflicts over nature protection and tourism development. This paper focuses on the analysis of problems that protected areas are facing in relation to tourism development, in particular from the Croatian protected areas' point of view (specifically, national parks and nature parks). Additionally it offers some recommendations concerning possible environmental management strategies, specifically those related to visitor management, whose tools ought to be implemented in order to keep both the protected areas' system and tourism development sustainable. These recommendations are to be discussed from the prospective of the new governance system implementation that might help in achieving the sustainability goals of Croatian protected areas.
