Further data is presented on 52 hospitalised patients with urinary tract infection (UTI) described previously' who were randomly allocated to 7 days' oral treatment with either Augmentin or co-trimoxazole.Ninety-six per cent of patients in the Augmentin group and 85010 of patients in the cotrimoxazole group were clinically cured. Of those cured, the mean time to cure was significantly less (p = 0.0004) in patients treated with Augmentin (3.2 days) than in those treated with co-trimoxazole (4.8 days). Further, patients with sensitive organisms treated with Augmentin had a significantly shorter time to clinical cure than those with organisms sensitive to both sulphamethoxazole and trimethoprim and treated with co-trimoxazole. It is concluded that Augmentin is a clinically more appropriate treatment for UTI than co-trimoxazole.
