The ABO blood groups of carcinoma of the oesophagus and of benign prostatic hyperplasia

Abstract: SYNOPSISThe results of an investigation show that there is no statistically significant excess of blood group A in cases of carcinoma of the oesophagus or in cases of benign prostatic hyperplasia. It has been shown that an association, based on large numbers of cases, exists between the ABO blood groups and gastro-duodenal disease. However, there have been a few reports only of the distribution of the ABO blood groups in oesophageal carcinoma. This paper adds a further 272 cases. CARCINOMA OF THE OESOPHAGUS

“…Interestingly, the relative risk of metastasis was 1.29 times higher in subjects who simultaneously possessed Rh+ and A blood group. Although in reference No17 there was suggested that the blood group B may play a role in the development of esophageal carcinoma, several subsequent investigations failed to confirm this hypothesis (Aird et al, 1960;Beasley, 1964;Wapnick et al, 1972). Finally, two studies regarding lung cancer did not obtain any significant associations (Jakoubkova and Majsky, 1965;Roberts et al, 1988); however, another study demonstrated that the frequency of the blood group A was significantly higher in lung cancer patients in comparison with corresponding donors (Roots et al, 1988).…”

“…An association between the ABO blood group system and colorectal cancer risk has not been confirmed in series of studies performed in different populations and ethnicities (Halvorsen, 1986;Slater et al, 1993;Khalili et al, 2011). Similarly, a lack of statistically significant correlations was observed between the ABO system and development of prostate cancer (Wajsman et al, 1997), benign prostate hyperplasia (Beasley, 1964), bladder cancer (Orihuela and Shahon, 1987;Raitanen and Tammela, 1993), testicular cancer (Morrison, 1976;O'Connell and Christenson, 1980) and salivary gland cancer (Pinkston and Cole, 1996). Additionally, several studies reported contradictory results.…”

“…An analysis of multiple reports of the link between blood type and benign hyperplasia found no association with any of the blood types in this premalignant condition [60]. Lack of association between blood type and prostate cancer risk or survival has also been reported [61,62].…”

“…All of the eligible studies comprised a total of 13,413 cases and 212,356 controls, and ranged from 112 to 63,346 subjects in each report. The articles were conducted in the following regions: Asia (n = 6) [12,[29][30][31][32] and Europe (n = 6) [16,[24][25][26][27][28]. The majority of included articles were population-based studies (n = 9) [24-29, 31, 32].…”

“…And the hand search identified additional five articles. Eventually, 11 studies plus our case-control study were included in the final meta-analysis, with a total sample size of 225,796 subjects [12,16,[24][25][26][27][28][29][30][31][32]. The characteristics of selected studies were described in Table S2.…”
