The 6M approach to land subsidence

Abstract: Abstract. Though global awareness of land subsidence has increased over recent years, subsidence remains an ongoing and largely unsolved problem, which is exemplified by frequent discoveries of apparently new subsiding areas. This means that for many of these areas there is a continuous and growing need to provide guidance to decision makers on how to tackle this global problem. This paper presents a comprehensive, step-by-step approach to address land subsidence, illustrated by best practise examples from aro… Show more

“…This phenomenon occurs suddenly or sometimes gradually due to a number of natural as well as anthropogenic factors. The main factors for their occurrences are earthquakes, volcanic activity, floods, overexploitation of groundwater and its decline, mining activities, tunnel construction, and so on (Erkens and Stouthamer, 2020;Lyu et al, 2020). Among all these possible factors, groundwater exploitation and structural weakness are the most important issues in this concern (Yu et al, 2020).…”

“…Within IGCP 663 we developed an analysis of the vulnerability of these environments to relative sea level rise (RSLR) considering an uneven land subsidence distribution that improved the assessment of vulnerability to RSLR at the regional scale. The outcomes of the analysis are available to the authorities responsible for water resources and coastal protection (Wang et al, 2012;Erkens and Stouthamer, 2020;Yang et al, 2020).…”

“…Population adaptation to land subsidence has been a better strategy for managing the hazard. Some adaptations have been implemented by the community, such as creating traditional embankments and raising houses hence they will not be inundated by the flood [8]. Flooding is one of the disasters that resulted from land subsidence in Jakarta City.…”
