TFTR DT experiments

Abstract: The Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) is a large tokamak which has performed experiments with 50:50 deuterium-tritium fuelled plasmas. Since 1993, TFTR has produced about 1090 D-T plasmas using about 100 grams of tritium and producing about 1.6 GJ of D-T fusion energy. These plasmas have significant populations of 3.5 MeV alphas (the charged D-T fusion product). TFTR research has focused on alpha particle confinement, alpha driven modes, and alpha heating studies. Maximum D-T fusion power production has aided… Show more

“…While the ICRF scenarios for the full-field DT phase of ITER have already been extensively explored in the past (see [30][31][32][33][34] and references therein), the heating schemes for the non-active half-field phase in hydrogen plasmas were not yet investigated carefully in large tokamaks. Recently, JET experiments have been designed to test some of these scenarios and numerical efforts for assessing their performance under ITER conditions have been put forward [35][36][37].…”

“…The initial high-powered DT experiments in TFTR did not show any evidence for alpha-driven TAEs, either during or after termination of neutral beam injection [99]. This absence of TAE activity during standard "supershot" plasmas persisted through the TFTR DT run [44][45][46], including the highest fusion power discharges which reached up to β α (0)~0.3%, i.e. about ten times the level of the initially expected theoretical threshold.…”

“…There have been several reviews of the TFTR DT experiments [44][45][46] and machine operations [47][48]. Only a very brief summary of the overall TFTR DT experimental environment is given here for orientation.…”

Our major role in their development was recognized through an invited paper at the 1998 Pittsburgh DPP-AB meeting 19,141 and through our inclusion as coauthors on some major TFI'R [2,4,8] and DIII-D 151 papers.…”
