Experiments were carried out in the JET tokamak to determine the critical ion temperature inverse gradient length (R/LTi=R|nablaTi|/Ti) for the onset of ion temperature gradient modes and the stiffness of Ti profiles with respect to deviations from the critical value. Threshold and stiffness have been compared with linear and nonlinear predictions of the gyrokinetic code GS2. Plasmas with higher values of toroidal rotation show a significant increase in R/LTi, which is found to be mainly due to a decrease of the stiffness level. This finding has implications on the extrapolation to future machines of present day results on the role of rotation on confinement.

The dependence of plasma transport and confinement on the main hydrogenic ion isotope mass is of fundamental importance for understanding turbulent transport and, therefore, for accurate extrapolations of confinement from present tokamak experiments, which typically use a single hydrogen isotope, to burning plasmas such as ITER, which will operate in deuterium-tritium mixtures. Knowledge of the dependence of plasma properties and edge transport barrier formation on main ion species is critical in view of the initial, low-activation phase of ITER operations in hydrogen or helium and of its implications on the subsequent operation in deuterium-tritium. The favourable scaling of global energy confinement time with isotope mass, which has been observed in many tokamak experiments, remains largely unexplained theoretically. Moreover, the mass scaling observed in experiments varies depending on the plasma edge conditions. In preparation for upcoming deuterium-tritium experiments in the JET tokamak with the ITER-like Be/W Wall (JET-ILW), a thorough experimental investigation of isotope effects in hydrogen, deuterium and tritium plasmas is being carried out, in order to provide stringent tests of plasma energy, particle and momentum transport models. Recent hydrogen and deuterium isotope experiments in JET-ILW on L-H power threshold, L-mode and H-mode confinement are reviewed and discussed in the context of past and more recent isotope experiments in tokamak plasmas, highlighting common elements as well as contrasting observations that have been reported. The experimental findings are discussed in the context of fundamental aspects of plasma transport models.

New transport experiments on JET indicate that ion stiffness mitigation in the core of a rotating plasma, as described by Mantica et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 175002 (2009)] results from the combined effect of high rotational shear and low magnetic shear. The observations have important implications for the understanding of improved ion core confinement in advanced tokamak scenarios. Simulations using quasilinear fluid and gyrofluid models show features of stiffness mitigation, while nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations do not. The JET experiments indicate that advanced tokamak scenarios in future devices will require sufficient rotational shear and the capability of q profile manipulation.

A comparison of the L–H power threshold (Pthr) in JET with all carbon, JET-C, and beryllium/tungsten wall (the ITER-like choice), JET-ILW, has been carried out in experiments with slow input power ramps and matched plasma shapes, divertor configuration and IP/BT pairs. The low density dependence of the L–H power threshold, namely an increase below a minimum density ne,min, which was first observed in JET with the MkII-GB divertor and C wall and subsequently not observed with the current MkII-HD geometry, is observed again with JET-ILW. At plasma densities above ne,min, Pthr is reduced by ∼30%, and by ∼40% when the radiation from the bulk plasma is subtracted (Psep), with JET-ILW compared to JET-C. At the L–H transition the electron temperature at the edge, where the pedestal later develops, is also lower with JET-ILW, for a given edge density. With JET-ILW the minimum density is found to increase roughly linearly with magnetic field, , while the power threshold at the minimum density scales as . The H-mode power threshold in JET-ILW is found to be sensitive both to variations in main plasma shape (Psep decreases with increasing lower triangularity and increases with upper triangularity) and in divertor configuration. When the data are recast in terms of Psep and Zeff or subdivertor neutral pressure a linear correlation is found, pointing to a possible role of Zeff and/or subdivertor neutral pressure in the L–H transition physics. Depending on the chosen divertor configuration, Pthr can be up to a factor of two lower than the ITPA scaling law for densities above ne,min. A shallow edge radial electric field well is observed at the L–H transition. The edge impurity ion poloidal velocity remains low, close to its L-mode values, ⩽5 km s−1 ± 2–3 km s−1, at the L–H transition and throughout the H-mode phase, with no measureable increase within the experimental uncertainties. The edge toroidal rotation profile does not contribute to the depth of the negative Er well and thus may not be correlated with the formation of the edge transport barrier in JET.

Abstract:During the initial operation of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), it is envisaged that activation will be minimised by using hydrogen (H) plasmas where the reference ion cyclotron resonance frequency (ICRF) heating scenarios rely on minority species such as helium ( 3 He) or deuterium (D). This paper firstly describes experiments dedicated to the study of 3 He heating in H plasmas with a sequence of discharges in which 5 MW of ICRF power was reliably coupled and the 3 He concentration, controlled in real-time, was varied from below 1 % up to 10 %. The minority heating regime was observed at low concentrations (up to 2 %). Energetic tails in the 3 He ion distributions were observed with effective temperatures up to 300 keV and bulk electron temperatures up to 6 keV. At around 2 %, a sudden transition was reproducibly observed to the mode conversion regime, in which the ICRF fast wave couples to short wavelength modes, leading to efficient direct electron heating and bulk electron temperatures up to 8 keV. Secondly, experiments performed to study D minority ion heating in H plasmas are presented. This minority heating scheme proved much more difficult since modest quantities of carbon (C) impurity ions, which have the same charge to mass ratio as the D ions, led directly to the mode conversion regime.Finally, numerical simulations to interpret these two sets of experiments are under way and preliminary results are shown.

The spectral broadening of characteristic γ-ray emission peaks from the reaction (12)C((3)He,pγ)(14)N was measured in D((3)He) plasmas of the JET tokamak with ion cyclotron resonance heating tuned to the fundamental harmonic of (3)He. Intensities and detailed spectral shapes of γ-ray emission peaks were successfully reproduced using a physics model combining the kinetics of the reacting ions with a detailed description of the nuclear reaction differential cross sections for populating the L1-L8 (14)N excitation levels yielding the observed γ-ray emission. The results provide a paradigm, which leverages knowledge from areas of physics outside traditional plasma physics, for the development of nuclear radiation based methods for understanding and controlling fusion burning plasmas.

The W-transport in the core plasma of JET is investigated experimentally by deriving the W-concentration profiles from the modelling of the signals of the soft x-ray cameras. For the case of pure neutral beam heating W accumulates in the core (r/a < 0.3) approaching W-concentrations of 10 −3 in between the sawtooth crashes, which flatten the W-profile to a concentration of about 3 × 10 −5 . When central Ion cyclotron resonant heating is additionally applied the core W-concentration decays in phases that exhibit a changed mode activity, while also the electron temperature increases and the density profile becomes less peaked. The immediate correlation between the change of magnetohydrodymanic (MHD) and the removal of W from the plasma core supports the hypothesis that the change of the MHD activity is the underlying cause for the change of transport. Furthermore, a discharge from the ASDEX Upgrade is investigated. In this case the plasma profiles exhibit small changes only, while the most prominent change occurs in the W-content of the confined plasma caused by the reduction of the fuelling deuterium gas puff. Concomintantly, the W-concentration profiles in the core plasma r/a < 0.2 steepen up reminescent to the well-known connection between central radiation and transport during cases with strong, established W-accumulation, while in the present analysis such a causality between the two during the onset of W-accumulation could not be pinned down. Both case studies exemplify that small changes of the core parameters of a plasma my influence the W-transport in the plasma core drastically.

This paper reports the progress made at JET-ILW on integrating the requirements of the reference ITER baseline scenario with normalised confinement factor of 1, at a normalised pressure of 1.8 together with partially detached divertor whilst maintaining these conditions over many energy confinement time. The 2.5MA high triangularity ELMy H-modes are studied with two different divertor configurations. The power load reduction with N seeding is reported. The relationship between an increase in energy confinement and pedestal pressure with triangularity is investigated. The operational space of both plasma configurations is studied together the ELM energy losses and stability of the pedestal of unseeded and seeded plasmas.
