Testing A Theoretical Proposition for Modeling and Role-Modeling: Basic Need and Adaptive Potential Status

Abstract: The purpose of this research was to test the validity of a propositional statement within the Modeling and Role-Modeling theory and paradigm (Erickson, Tomlin, & Swain, 1988). The Adaptive Potential Assessment Model (APAM) is part of a multidimensional assessment strategy used by nurses to determine ability to mobilize coping resources. This study tested the theoretical proposition that basic need satisfaction and adaptive potential status are directly related. Three study hypotheses were deduced from the iden… Show more

“…The relative instability of the regions of satisfaction is also assumed to apply to psychogenic needs like those for esteem, relatedness, control, etc. (e.g., Barnfather, 1993; Deci & Ryan, 2000; Lykken & Tellegen, 1996; Maslow, 1943; Wolbring, Keuschnigg, & Negele, 2013).…”

“…Another study with undereducated adults enrolled in an adult education program indicated adaptive potential was useful in predicting attendance rates (Barnfather, 1988). Multidimensional scaling analysis supported the hypothesis that basic need satisfaction and adaptive potential are directly related (Barnfather, 1993).…”

“…Furthermore, SCR develop over time as basic needs are met and psychosocial developmental tasks are accomplished (Erickson et al, 1983). Much early research with MRM focused on describing and exploring the concepts within the theory (Barnfather, 1990(Barnfather, , 1993Erickson, 1990). Nurse researchers also have described and studied MRM-based interventions (Acton & Miller, 1996;Baker, 1999;Miller, 1990;Sappington & Kelley, 1996).…”
