Test of a model of psychosocial resources, stress, and health among undereducated adults

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to test a model drawn from the Modeling and Role-Modeling theory depicting relationships among psychosocial resources, perceived stress, and health for undereducated adults. A purposive sample of 171 adults enrolled at an urban adult education center completed several self-report measures: Modified Erikson Psychological Stage Inventory, Basic Need Satisfaction Inventory, Perceived Stress, and Positive Health Index. “…This provides evidence that if resilience protects individuals from psychological distress, it is likely also to protect their physical, emotional and functional health. Barnfather and Ronis (2000) examined relationships between psychological development, basic need satisfaction, perceived stress and health amongst 171 adults with low levels of education. Using structural equation modelling techniques, they found correlations between higher levels of psychological development and positive health.…”

“…[1] In a study by Acton (1993), based on the theory of Erickson et al, basic needs satisfaction was the main predictor of well-being status of care providers for Alzheimer patients, and the total model described 49 percent of variance of care providers' well-being. [2] Barnfather (1993) reported that there is relationship between basic needs satisfaction and potential adaptation status. Individuals that their four basic needs (Out of four) were met, they have been in more balanced state in terms of adaptation and none of them was in impoverishment stage, where one is not able to cope with stress.…”
