Testicular steroidogenesis in adult men with human chorionic gonadotropin-producing tumors.

Abstract: There are few critical studies on plasma testosterone (T) and 17 beta-estradiol (E2) levels in men with hCG-producing tumors, and the results are contradictory. Plasma E2 levels are most often elevated, whereas plasma T values are high or in the normal range. We studied the plasma levels of such steroids and of delta 4 and delta 5 T precursors in adult men with intact hCG-producing tumors to evaluate the relationship between hCG and steroid hormone levels or steroidogenic enzyme activities. Ten adult men with … Show more

“…The data in infertile men are numerous [3,14,19; for reviews, see 2,35], and several studies have focused on the understanding of human testicular cell functions in vitro [1,17,28,36,40; for review, see 7]. Besides the special architecture of the Sertoli cells [10,43], the presence of integrins and cadherins, which are involved in the cell-cell adhesion, has been reported [31].…”

“…In contrast, high LH levels induced only slightly decreasing androstenedione levels which remained higher than those in patients with normal LH levels. 17-hydroxylase activity, irrespective of LH levels. This strongly suggests that serum factors induce these P450 activity changes in most of these patients.…”

“…The detection limit was 0.1 IU/l. Serum 17-OHP, androstenedione and testosterone levels were measured by RIA after chromatography on a Celite column (Touzet Matignon, Paris, France) and serum E 2 was determined by RIA, as previously described (17). For all these steroid hormones, intra-and interassay coefficients of variation were less than 6% and less than 9% respectively.…”

“…rhLH doses were injected intravenously in a random order. Then, the blood was withdrawn at the following times (30,60,90,120,150,180,240, and 300 min) in order to measure LH, T, and E 2 plasma levels.…”
