Others contend an increased focus on terrorism in the past 15 years is the result of conflating terrorist activity with insurgency. We shed light on these claims by analyzing data on domestic and transnational terrorist incidence from 1989 to 2014. The evidence suggests that the years since 9/11 have been different from those preceding them. Once the prevalence of conflicts is accounted for, the post… Show more

“…It seems that executive management and leadership of health care systems during emergency is of great importance for adequate ward functioning. For the past decade, there has been a dramatic rise in the number of terrorist attacks around the world, from around one thousand in 2004 to almost 17,000 in 2014 (Smith & Zeigler, ). Terror attacks that resulted in fatalities and injuries, perpetrated in 2017 in Europe, such as the bomb that exploded on a London subway on September 15, van ramming in London and Barcelona on June 3 and August 17, respectively, the Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, England on May 22, and others (http://www.foxnews.com/world/2017/11/01/timeline-recent-terror-attacks-against-west.html) highlight the importance of the preparedness for responding to incidents of this type.…”

“…Following 9/11, the planning and execution of terrorist attacks have become demonstrably more sophisticated, resulting in greater societal impact in terms of lives taken and fear instilled. 2 Trends in terrorism-related medical literature demonstrate a steady drop-off following a 9/11/2001 spike, which saw a significant increase in the Western medical literature focused on terrorism and its health care implications, despite no concurrent increase in transnational Western terrorism over that same period, emphasizing the global impact of the 9/11 attacks ( Figure 1). 3 Despite this, there remains no commonality of understanding or consolidation of this specialism.…”
