This study investigated the change in soil organic carbon (SOC), soil labile carbon (C), soil total nitrogen (N), particulate organic carbon (POC), mineralizable soil C (Min‐C) in soil aggregate fractions, and soil particles size at 0–30 cm soil depth of the semi‐steppe rangelands in Central Iran (Sheida and Khargosh regions). The study used a fully randomized design with four land uses in the rangelands including covered with rainfed wheat (CR0), abandoned rangelands (ARs) for 5–15 years (AR15), abandoned rangeland for 16–40 years (AR40), and permanently uncultivated rangelands (UR) as the reference sites that were replicated three times (n = 3) with at most 2 km distance from each other in an area of 25 ha. For each treatment, the soil samples were randomly obtained at 0–30 cm soil depth in three replicated plots of 2 × 2 m using a core size of 7 cm in diameter. The samples were mixed to take a composite soil sample (12 soil samples in each region) in June 2018. The results indicated that soil POC is the most sensitive fraction for the identification of shifts in the total SOC after the cultivation cessation because by increasing the abandoned land and the cessation of cropland activities, the POC has also increased. In conclusion, after the cessation of rainfed cropping and the recovery of natural vegetation, the increases in soil microorganism activity can result in a higher nutrient cycling in the degraded rangeland ecosystems.

Traditionally, the genus Rhinopithecus (Milne-Edwards, 1872, Primates, Colobinae) included four allopatric species, restricted in their distributions to China and Vietnam. In 2010, a fifth species, the black snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus strykeri) was discovered in the Gaoligong Mountains located on the border between China and Myanmar.Despite the remoteness, complex mountainous terrain, dense fog, and armed conflict that characterizes this region, over this past decade Chinese and Myanmar scientists have begun to collect quantitative data on the ecology, behavior and conservation requirements of R. strykeri. In this article, we review the existing data and present new information on the life history, ecology, and population size of R. strykeri. We discuss these data in the context of past and current conservation challenges faced by R. strykeri, and propose a series of both short-term and long-term management actions to ensure the survival of this Critically Endangered primate species. Specifically, we recommend that the governments and stakeholders in China and Myanmar formulate a transboundary conservation agreement that includes a consensus on bilateral exchange mechanisms, scientific research and monitoring goals, local community development, cooperation to prevent the hunting of endangered species and cross-border forest fires. Mango (Mangifera indica L.) is broadly grown in tropical regions and can also be cultivated in irrigated subtropical semi-arid areas; however, water shortages are a serious problem in the latter region. Among biotic and abiotic factors, water supply is one of the most crucial elements that determine productivity. The allocation of water will be an ever-increasing source of pressure because of vast agricultural demands under changing climatic conditions. Although the mango is considered to be tolerant to drought, water stress during growing cycle can reduce productivity. Here, we review the recent progress in evaluating and augmenting mango water productivity. Developments in physiological and agronomic understanding that have led to a boost in water productivity are presented. In addition, this review deals with deficit irrigation strategies to elucidate the effects on mango yield, water use efficiency, and the response of physiological indicators to water stress. Our main findings were as follows: (1) Under a changing climate, traditional irrigation based on water balance will not be sustainable in the medium/long term; (2) deficit irrigation strategies applied to mango can save irrigation water by up to 40% and improve water use efficiency by up to 30%; and (3) there is valuable potential for further improvement owing to advanced knowledge in terms of the physiological response of mango to water stress, and there are good prospects within the current approaches if they are associated with specific environmental physiology. We concluded that under current medium-/long-term perspectives regarding available water resources, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions, there is an urgent demand for adaptive and water-saving strategies. Thus, it will be vital to redesign irrigation schemes in areas where water is scarce to adjust deficit irrigation strategies not only to save water, enhance water use efficiency, and maintain yield, but also to produce fruits with improved quality.
