Temporal and Spatial Variation of Frondose Benthic Seaweeds in La Paz Bay, B. C. S., Mexico

Abstract: To evaluate the temporal and spatial variation of the marine algal biomass present during 1993, we systematically sampled ten sites every three months in La Paz Bay. The sampling was made using two 200-m lines perpendicular to the coast. The samples were taken every 10 m along both lines, using a square meter as the sampling unit. The total biomass had a monodal cycle with the maximum in spring and the minimum in winter.

“…The only other papers that described the seasonality of C. sertularioides from south-eastern Baja California (Casas Valdez et al, 1997;Cruz-Ayala et al, 1998 were based on seasonal surveys done in La Paz Bay in 1993. However, those papers described such annual cycle in con£icting ways, which prevents any useful comparison with this study.…”

“…Thus, population ecological studies for this species could serve as a basis for making ecological and evolutionary comparisons between geographically distant regions. This paper analyses interannual di¡erences of the population abundance of C. sertularioides from south-eastern Baja California, Mexico, where this species is frequent (Casas Valdez et al, 1997;Cruz-Ayala et al, 1998Paul-Cha¨vez & Riosmena-Rodr|¨guez, 2000). Then, it is important to undertake ecological research speci¢cally on C. sertularioides populations.…”

“…Additionally, 18-30 healthy fronds of nine macroalgal species were detached at the basal holdfast by hand: three green (Caulerpa sertularioides, Codium simulans, and Ulva lactuca), two brown (Dictyota flabellata and Sargassum sinicola), and four red (Gracilaria pachydermatica, Hypnea valentiae, Laurencia papillosa, and Polysiphonia pacifica) macroalgae. These species are among the most abundant in this region, contributing >70 % of the seaweed biomass in Sargassum-dominated communities (Cruz-Ayala et al 1998). All macroalgal species were considered potential food sources.…”

“…La Gaviota Island is located to the southeast of La Paz Bay in Baja California Sur (24°17′20″ N, 110°20′30″ W). The island is an exposed site with a pronounced slope and is characterized by steep crags and rocky platforms that extend almost to 50 m. The bottom thereafter, is sandy (Cruz-Ayala et al 1998). The relative humidity is 50% during the day, causing a semidesert climate; the mean annual rainfall is 180 mm and mean annual evaporation is 300 mm.…”
