Template-free synthesis of Fe3O4 nanorod bundles and their highly efficient peroxidase mimetic activity for the degradation of organic dye pollutants with H2O2

Abstract: The high surface to volume ratio of Fe3O4 nanorods facilitates the excellent activation of H2O2 for the photo-Fenton-like degradation of crystal violet dye under solar light.

“…The degradation rate constant of these dyes was compared with other photocatalysts and given in Table S1 ( Supporting information). The CV degradation rate constant for g‐C 3 N 4 /Zn 3 (PO 4 ) 2 composite is 3.8 times higher than TiO 2 /clinoptilolites, 2 times than GO/Ag 2 S, [75] 2.7 times than sodium alginate/ZnO/GO, [76] 3.3 times than SnO 2 [77] and 12 times than α‐Fe 2 O 3 [78] …”

“…Many organic dyes are toxic and not easily degraded in wastewater treatment plants [ 159 ]. These dyes serve as chromogenic substrates for the nanozymes, with the colour diminishing over time [ 160 , 161 ]. Antibiotics are classified as emerging pseudo-persistent organic pollutants as they are resistant to biodegradation due to their antimicrobial nature [ 162 ].…”

“…Fe 3 O 4 MNPs or nanorods have also been successfully used in the degradation of Rhodamine B (Rh B) [ 175 ], crystal violet [ 160 , 180 ], methylene blue [ 161 , 180 ] and methyl orange [ 180 ] in the presence of hydrogen peroxide with peroxidase activity. Humic-acid-coated ferromagnetic nanoparticles (Fe 3 O 4 10–12 nm in size) were effective for the removal of sulfathiazole from aqueous media in the presence of H 2 O 2 .…”
