Temperature Effect on the Thermal Conductivity of Expanded Polystyrene Foamed Concrete: Experimental Investigation and Model Correction

Abstract: In this research, ultralightweight expanded polystyrene foamed concrete (EFC) was made by the chemical foaming method, and its thermal insulation property was measured by the transient method at different environment temperatures (from −10 to 40°C). Then, the effect of temperature and EPS volume fraction on the thermal conductivity and dry density of EFC were observed. Ultimately, the Cheng–Vachon equation was modified by introducing the temperature parameter. The results indicated that EFC thermal conductivit… Show more

“…There are many methods used to measure the thermal conductivity of cement composites [ 37 ]. However, we chose a simple method involving the use of a machine: Isomet-2114 (Applied Precision, Bratislava, Slovakia) [ 38 , 39 , 40 ]. Isomet-2114 is widely used to measure the thermal conductivity of the concrete specimens and the results are accurate.…”

“…Using of plastic in concrete is not a new topic for the science, but the usage of which type of plastic under suitable conditions in concrete holds the difference. In concrete the failure of the structure will be initiated with the failure of the aggregate (7) . The natural failure pattern of concrete is brittle in nature and also it has the tendency to carry the entire compressive load which is similar for the coarse aggregate (8) .…”

“…With the ability to adjust the densities of cement-based foam concretes (density of 400-1850 kg/m 3 [7]), it may be employed mainly in structural partition walls and places where high thermal insulation values are required [8]. In addition, foam concrete has superior strength and fire resistance when compared to organic insulation materials [7,[9][10][11].…”
