Technical Evaluation of HoloLens for Multimedia: A First Look

Abstract: Augmented-reality (AR) technology has been developing rapidly for decades. A recently released cutting-edge AR device, Microsoft HoloLens, has attracted considerable attention with its advanced capabilities. In this paper, we report the design and execution of a series of experiments to quantitatively evaluate HoloLens' performance in head localization, real environment reconstruction, spatial mapping, hologram visualization, and speech recognition. The results show that HoloLens is able to estimate head postu… Show more

“…The HoloLens has already been evaluated in regard of a range of different aspects. For instance, Liu et al [9] provide a first basic evaluation of the HoloLens as AR device, while Vassallo et al [10] specifically investigate the perceived spatial stability of holograms. An investigation regarding the quality of the usage experience enabled by the HoloLens is provided by Zhang et al [11].…”

“…In many cases, AR is also called Mixed Reality (MR), where holograms can interact with the physical world using the concept of occlusion. One of the enablers of AR/MR applications is the technology called Sensors 2020, 20, 690 3 of 16 spatial mapping [5,7]. Spatial mapping creates a detailed representation of real-world surfaces of the environment so as holograms can interact with the physical environment.…”

“…Six cameras integrated in the headset scan the environment (Evans et al 2017). The camera recordings are then used to build a spatial representation of all perceived objects (Liu et al 2018). As this representation can be exported as a 3D model, the HoloLens can also be used to visualize 3D space (see Fig.…”
