Technical Challenges and Optimization of Biogas Plants

Abstract: Countries with a large agricultural sector have enormous potential for energy production using biogas technology. This paper analyses the situation in Pakistan as a representative example. Although many biogas plants were installed, only very slow growth in the biogas sector can be observed. Since the last three decades the country is facing a severe energy shortfall. To overcome this challenge, energy from organic waste is one of the best possible solution. This study reviews the key technical challenges asso… Show more

“…The daily biogas plant capacity for cooking and lighting varied from 3000 to 5000 Free Triiodothyronine Feet (biogas measurement unit) (Kamran 2018 ). Agriculture is Pakistan’s major sector, providing 18.5% of its gross domestic product (GDP) and employing 38.5% of the population (Afridi and Qammar 2020 ).…”

“…Pakistan’s potential energy output of 4800 to 5600 MW from animal waste. The biochemical and thermochemical potential for generating power from municipal solid waste is 220 kWh/t and 560 kWh/t, respectively (Afridi and Qammar 2020 ). Due to its agricultural character, Pakistan possesses many animal-based biogas resources.…”

“…Items based on the availability of technicians for biogas plants were constructed from the study (Shahzad et al, 2020). Things regarding the operational and maintenance government support were adopted from this research study (Afridi & Qammar, 2020). Items related to the lowcost and clear policy were assumed from (Słupek et al, 2020).…”

“…Agriculture is the primary source of revenue for a big portion of the population in the country. Consequently, the well-promoted biogas slurry use in agriculture can improve the soil health & production of crops and curtail the cost of fertilizers ultimately (Afridi & Qammar, 2020).…”

“…Major chunk of population in Pakistan earns their livelihood from the agriculture. Thus, use of biogas slurry in agriculture, if promoted well can curtail the cost of fertilizers and improve the soil health and production of crops eventually (Afridi and Qammar, 2020). Collection of bio-slurry through process of biogas generation was augmented effective for the soil fertility by the biogas users (Ashraf et al, 2019).…”
