Pesantren (Islamic boarding school), a place for religious learning, has been tarnished because it is considered as a breeding ground for extremism and radicalism. This paper aims to examine the view that pesantren is not an institution for radicalism to be seedbed. However, it is an institution that is open, inclusive, and can accommodate modernity. In line with that idea, three questions could be formulated. First, how is the learning curriculum in pesantren? Second, how is the implementation of learning in pesantren? Third, how is the portrayal of inclusive graduates as the learning impact in pesantren? This study uses qualitative research with curriculum/materials and learning methods in pesantren as the object of the study. The data were collected from sources such as kyai (preacher), ustadz, santri (Islamic boarding school students), graduates, administrators of pesantren who were selected by purposive sampling, with documentation study methods, observations, and interviews. The analysis uses a descriptive method to portray the entire curriculum and learning conditions conducted in pesantren. Then they were analyzed interpretively to see the relationship between the formation of santri's inclusive attitudes. This study shows that the curriculum and learning methods have a significant role in shaping the students' attitudes. A sequential-comprehensive curriculum structure and discursive learning methods will form an inclusive (open and tolerant) student personality. Therefore, other pesantren(s) need to transform towards a discursive curriculum and learning to lead to inclusive students. Preventing Radicalism through Integrative Curriculum at Higher Education

Religious radicalism which spread across the globe has turned into a global problem and raised concern among scholars to discuss. Higher education institutions which are supposed to educate cadre of high-intensity scholars on an empirical level have to some extent failed to meet the expectation. In Indonesia, some of the institutions have been deemed as a place of metamorphosis for potential site to nurture radicalism understanding and movement among their students on campus. This paper was aimed at investigating university effort to join the global struggle against radicalism. This study applied descriptive qualitative research using survey methods. Data were collected using observation and documentation. Using the theory of positive radicalism which demands transformation with a comprehensive religious understanding, this study analyzed the data. The results of the study show that the phenomenon of radicalism at higher education can be handled by implementing integrative curriculums as one of the feasible ways for higher education institutions to participate and establish their role. Integrative curriculum can be applied to catalyze new energy to present a more comprehensive and tolerant atmosphere by emphasizing the role of Islam in building world civilization.

How to Deal and Negotiate with the Campus Environment? Female Students’ Experiences in Reconstructing Gender Identity

Being an ‘ideal woman of Muslim version,’ or muslimah in Indonesia, is the expectation from any family, and studying at pesantren (Islamic boarding school) is an option. However, female students confronted cultural shock when switching to a campus environment and experienced identity mediation. Experiences of study and interaction with the campus environment as well as the confrontation of gender norms between different pesantren and university, require them to renegotiate the meaning of gender and reinterpret Islamic teachings to meet their developing identity needs. To enhance our comprehension of the potential impact of higher education on gender identity negotiations, this study researched three female students who graduated from pesantren and then continued their education at university. The researchers employed in-depth interviews, discussions, and sharing of experiences through essays to obtain comprehensive information. This study found that pesantren and campus create an environment for thinking development. Some took the middle path to become more moderate, and others even resisted the pesantren doctrine. It generates novel assumptions concerning gender rather than the two prevalent perspectives, traditionalists who preserve the old system or principles and feminists who battle for gender justice based on their interpretation. Therefore, it is suggested that pesantren begin to adapt to the curriculum and public-school materials relevant to the era. Preserving a conservative notion of gender will diminish interest in studying at the pesantren.
