Teaching Data Communications and Networking to School of Business Undergraduates: A Pedagogical Framework for Juxtaposing Theory and Practice

Abstract: This article proposes a pedagogical framework for teaching an introductory data communications and networking (DCN) course to Management Information Systems (MIS) undergraduate majors within a school of business. Building on the material provided in commonly used DCN undergraduate textbooks, the course introduces students to both theoretical and applied knowledge necessary to solve business and DCN technology problems. Since it is taught in a business school, the course encompasses students’ previous business … Show more

“…For example, Linge and Parsons (2006) employed realistic cases in a "Data Telecommunications and Networks" module and they concluded that this is an ideal method for teaching computer network design. Gendron and Jarmoszko (2003) successfully utilized relevant real world problems to teach "Data Communications and Networking", while Noor (2003) applied the same learning principles to teach "Network Design and Management".…”

“…Gendron and Jarmoszko [3] have successfully exploited PBL to teach data communications and networking to undergraduate students studying information systems. Here, a two-thread framework is employed in which a theoretical thread provides the fundamental theory, and an applied thread uses a business-case simulation tool to experience practical business issues.…”

“…Achieving Data Communication competency is a challenging job, because there are data communication concepts that are difficult to explain using a whiteboard or a module in text form (Latih, Hassan, & Ali, 2012). In addition, lecturers in the Data Communication course are not only required to explain the material, but also need to build an understanding of "how" and "why" the data communication process works (Gendron & Jarmoszko, 2003). The development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) also encourages changes in communication materials that give rise to various terms that sometimes do not correspond to technological details (Bostan, 2015).…”
