Tanshinone IIA protects against pulmonary arterial hypertension in broilers

Abstract: This investigation was conducted to study the effects of tanshinone IIA (TIIA) on pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) in broilers. Two-hundred newly hatched Arbor Acre commercial broilers were randomly divided into 3 groups. All groups, with the exception of the control group (tap water), were given NaCl water (0.3%) starting on the d 15, and broilers in the protected group were fed a diet supplemented with TIIA (2.5 g/kg) starting on the d 15. On d 28, 35, 42, and 49, the ratio of the right ventricular weig… Show more

“…aerial parts at the three doses did not cause differences in ADFI and ADG of rabbits among treatments. Literature showed that tanshinone IIA increased ADG of broilers with pulmonary arterial hypertension [ 14 ]; Salvia root improved egg performance of hens [ 15 ]; however, salvianolic acid B prevented ADG in high-fat diet-induced obese mice [ 16 ]. These inconsistencies in feed consumption and growth by feeding aerial parts, root, or bioactive compounds of S.m .…”

“…The activation of NF-κB exacerbates PH progression, and the inhibition of NF-κB reduces pulmonary artery occlusion [ 106 ]. A variety of natural products, such as TIIA, MLB, resveratrol, puerarin, betaine, baicalin, and baicalein, can treat PH by inhibiting NF-κB-related pathways [ 45 , 60 , 69 , 72 , 79 , 107 , 108 , 109 ]. In addition, NF-κB activation has been shown to increase MCP-1 expression and promote PASMCs proliferation.…”
