Tank wall colour and light level affect growth and survival of Eurasian perch larvae (Perca fluviatilis L.)

Abstract: The influence of interaction between light intensity and tank wall colours on survival and growth of perch larvae (Perca fluviatilis L.) was investigated for 15 days after hatching. Three light intensities (250, 400 and 800 lx) and four wall colours (black, dark grey, light grey and white) were used. At the end of the experiment, survival rates ranged between 1% and 26%, and varied according to the different treatments (P=0.0001; df=11). A global effect of light intensity was detected (P=0.0001; df=2) and the … Show more

“…In salmonids, background color decreases egg development and increases egg mortality (3). In other fish families, effects of environmental color have also been described, such as changes in schooling, fright reaction, and color attractiveness in Sardinops caerulea (4), Oplegnathus fasciatus, Monocanthus cirrhifer, Cybium niphonium, Spheroides niphobles, and Sphyraena japonica (5), and increased survival and growth in the Eurasian perch larvae, Perca fluviatilis (6).…”

“…A maioria dos estudos foca em mostrar os efeitos das cores do ambiente na sobrevivência e no canibalismo das larvas de peixes e organismos aquáticos (Tamazouzt et al, 2000;Yasharian et al, 2005), e a sua correlação com o estresse (Rotllant et al, 2003) e com o crescimento (Strand et al, 2007).…”

“…To improve the culture success optimizations were made in aspects of rearing conditions. Tamazouzt, Chatai, and Fontaine (2000) demonstrated that highest growth in weight and length was obtained in tanks with light grey and white walls, which were strongly illuminated. Contrary, according to Jentoft, Øxnevad, Aastveit, and Andersen (2006) perch larvae grew significantly faster in black tanks than in gray tanks due to better prey contrast.…”
