Tailoring nonlinear optical properties of Bi2Se3 through ion irradiation

Abstract: The nonlinear optical property of topological insulator bismuth selenide (Bi2Se3) is found to be well-tailored through ion irradiation by intentionally introducing defects. The increase of the optical modulation depth sensitively depends on the careful selection of the irradiation condition. By implementing the ion irradiated Bi2Se3 film as an optical saturable absorber device for the Q-switched wave-guide laser, an enhanced laser performance has been obtained including narrower pulse duration and higher peak … Show more

“…Figure 1b shows the Raman spectra of the as synthesized Bi 2 Se 3 NPs in which three different Raman peaks corresponding to three resonance modes are clearly evident. The three peaks located at 72, 131, 174 cm −1 are assigned to the A 1 1g , E 2 g , A 2 1g vibrational modes, respectively 30 32 . The high background signal is caused by the broad photoluminescence contribution.…”

“…Improved Q-switched lasing performance is obtained with irradiated samples, with a reduction of the pulse duration from 265 ns to 52 ns as the increase of the ion fluence. Similar work has been reported for Bi 2 Se 3 , in which the nonlinear properties could be modified by N + ion irradiation [67]. For 2D van der Waals heterostructures, the interlayer coupling could be effectively manipulated by ion beam technique.…”

“…For van der Waals heterostructures, the interlayer coupling of adjacent layers could also be modified, thus influence their nonlinear optical response. Some preliminary works have been carried out to reveal the role of ion beam modification in tailoring the optical properties [64,67,69,134]. Moreover, the nonlinear optical properties are expected to be manipulated with electrical or magnetic control.…”

“…Due to its higher in-plane stiffness and lower cleavage energies than graphite, the bulk structure of FePS 3 could be exfoliated down to the atomic thickness. Consequently, the technique of ion beam modification to achieve desired properties of various materials has been rapidly developed 1014 . There are three effects of ion beam irradiation on 2D materials: doping effect, structural modification and defect engineering 15,16 .…”
