Immunotoxicological impact and biodistribution assessment of bismuth selenide (Bi2Se3) nanoparticles following intratracheal instillation in mice

Abstract: Variously synthesized and fabricated Bi2Se3 nanoparticles (NPs) have recently been explored for their theranostic properties. Herein, we investigated the long term in-vivo biodistribution of Bi2Se3 NPs and systematically screened its immune-toxic potential over lungs and other secondary organs post intratracheal instillation. X-Ray CT scan and ICP MS results revealed significant particle localization and retention in lungs monitored for 1 h and 6 months time period respectively. Subsequent particle trafficking… Show more

“…According to the crystallographic spectrum, all of the diffraction peaks can be attributed to the pure rhombohedral phase of Bi (JCPDS No. 05-0519), which is consistent with previous research [11,30]. The most intense peak at 2h = 27.23 is obtained along (012) reflection plane and it is very close to the position of the strongest line (2h = 29.32) of the reference bismuth [30].…”

The most intense peak at 2h = 27.23 is obtained along (012) reflection plane and it is very close to the position of the strongest line (2h = 29.32) of the reference bismuth [30]. This XRD pattern suggests that the final product is elemental bismuth, not bismuth oxide, given the current synthetic circumstances.…”

“…The hydropathicity value of the final vaccine is predicted to be − 0.521. This negative value suggests that our final vaccine is hydrophilic in nature and can interact with water molecules easily 62 . The charge is 37.00; this value will decrease in alkaline environment so usually it is better if the charge values are positive.…”

“…These results in conjunction with other study parameters, suggest no major sign of respiratory, metabolic, or kidney disorders in SPA4 peptide-treated mice. Other published research studies have also investigated parameters of toxicity in other non-pulmonary organs of animals intratracheally treated with different agents, such as statin [36], vascular endothelial growth factorsmall-interfering RNA [37], iron oxide and bismuth selenide nanoparticles [38,39], ,and amphotericin B formulation [40].…”
