Tackling a VRP challenge to redistribute scarce equipment within time windows using metaheuristic algorithms

Abstract: This paper reports on the results of the VeRoLog Solver Challenge 2016-2017: the third solver challenge facilitated by VeRoLog, the EURO Working Group on Vehicle Routing and Logistics Optimization. The authors are the winners of second and third places, combined with members of the challenge organizing committee. The problem central to the challenge was a rich VRP: expensive and therefore scarce equipment was to be redistributed over customer locations within time windows. The difficulty was in creating combin… Show more

“…Without doubt, heuristic, and metaheuristic ideas have penetrated into the mindsets of practitioners that develop software for real‐life optimization, and increasingly, (meta)heuristic research is finding its way to practical application. As an illustration, (software) companies like PTV and ORTEC increasingly participate in conferences and write out challenges for researchers to solve their real‐life problems (Kheiri et al., 2019).…”

“…Furthermore, based on our findings the use of greedy approach for initialising the solutions of medium and large size instances leads to improved performance. The application of advanced algorithms, such as hyper-heuristics [15], [16] and evolutionary algorithms [17]- [19], is suggested for further research in order to escape local minima and achieve improved solutions for medium and large instances.…”

“…The key challenge is how to schedule the deliveries to satisfy the requests, while at the same time design efficient routes for the pick-ups and deliveries. The second place winner on this challenge used a hyper-heuristic approach based on an online selection method [38].…”
