Systems Thinking Approach to Sustainable Performance in RAMSAR Sites

Abstract: This article explores and validates the integrated use of the viable system model (VSM) and the partial least squares path modeling (PLS-PM) approach to assess the sustainable management of RAMSAR sites carrying out economic activities. This work adopts a systems-thinking approach integrating systemic methodologies in three phases: (1) the VSM was first used to develop a conceptual model of the organisational problem; (2) PLS-PM was used to propose a construct to outline a solution, as well as to statistically… Show more

“…By using the axiomatic design, Professor Suh envisaged a more systematic and optimized approach to the design problems of manufacturing technologies. Subsequently, with the contribution of researchers from various fields, the axiomatic design was to be applied in many other fields besides manufacturing engineering [17][18][19][20][21][22][23].…”

“…SSM helps to deal with ill-structured and complex human situations where objectives and activities are vague in nature and attempt to solve the same. SSM has its application in various research domains (Hanafizadeh and Mehrabioun, 2018;Hu et al, 2019;Potts et al, 2019;S anchez-Garc ıa et al, 2019;York et al, 2019). According to Shankar et al (2009), a typical SSM consists of seven steps.…”

“…However, it highlights that one of the pending challenges is identifying internal components that contribute to the application in organizational terms. Within the systems thinking framework, Schwaninger [32] considers that the Viable System Model has been reported as a feasible approach to sustainability issues [33][34][35], since problems in that context are characterized by the absence or deviation of controls at the operational level as well as a lack of coordination between coordination and management levels. In this context, this model provides a set of guidelines and criteria to design flexible organizational structures oriented to search for constant balance between actors and their context [36].…”
