“…Education for sustainable development is a concept that has been debated upon by a lot of researchers [14,16,17,22,28,34] based on the fact that: "An empowering education is one that builds the human resources we need to be productive, to continue to learn, to solve problems, to be creative, and to live together and with nature in peace and harmony. When nations ensure that such an education is accessible to all throughout their lives, a quiet revolution is set in motion: education becomes the engine of sustainable development (economic, social, moral, intellectual, and cultural) and the key to a better world" [65].…”

“…This is also the reason why we focused our research on the topic of education for sustainability in higher engineering education. Although there are many studies targeting similar topics regarding the universities' role in developing and enhancing sustainability-oriented competencies [2,7,[14][15][16][17], few of them are solely focused on analyzing the approach that technical universities have towards integrating sustainability and sustainable development into their curricula [11,[18][19][20][21][22][23][24].…”

“…Rural sustainability and the smartness of rural development is inevitably an important part of this activity, aimed at supporting the abovementioned goals. Table 1 shows a list of 17 SDGs for solving the present complex social, political, economic and environmental challenges for citizens, businesses, institutions, and governments [18]. The issue of the sustainable development of rural areas was raised in many different programs and strategies announced in the European Union by the European Parliament, the European Commission and specialized study or experts' groups [13][14][15][16].…”
