Synthesis, swelling properties, and network structure of new stimuli‐responsive poly(N‐acryloyl‐N′‐ethyl piperazine‐co‐N‐isopropylacrylamide) hydrogels

Abstract: Poly(N‐acryloyl‐N′‐ethyl piperazine‐co‐N‐isopropylacrylamide) hydrogels were prepared by thermal free‐radical copolymerization of N‐acryloyl‐N′‐ethyl piperazine (AcrNEP) and N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) in solution using N, N′‐methylene bisacrylamide as the crosslinking agent. The gels were responsive to changes in external stimuli such as pH and temperature. The pH and temperature responsive character of the gels was greatly dependent on the monomer content, namely AcrNEP and NIPAM, respectively. The gels sw… Show more

“…As it could be observed, all n sw values are below 0.5, which led to the conclusion that an anomalous mechanism of swelling occurred. This case is called a “less Fickian” behavior as already mentioned above but is also the case for swelling with other hydrogels [ 58 , 59 , 60 ].…”

“…In most published reports on the hydrogel swelling, values of n close to 0.5 or over 0.5 are presented. Only a few papers report values of n<0.5 [25,[43][44][45][46][47].…”

“…The volume phase transition temperature (VPT) of the gels A1N9 and A7N3 were measured to be 36 °C and 64.8 °C respectively which were in agreement with the LCST of the corresponding linear polymers [45]. This increase in VPT of A7N3 is due to the presence of a high amount of AcrNEP which is a hydrophilic comonomer.…”
