The high Si and Al contents in the amorphous phase of coal fly ash have been used for its conversion into zeolites. This process converts a toxic low-value by-product into a product used in a number of environmental applications, but has the disadvantage of introducing contaminants. Despite the large number of studies on the conversion of fly ash into zeolites, few report this drawback or discuss the efficiency of the proposed processes from a technical or ecological perspective. In this respect, the present study conducts a detailed assessment of two routes for integrated hydrothermal synthesis of zeolites 4A and Na-P1 obtained from coal fly ash. The processes are evaluated and compared in relation to the presence of undesirable metals and elements in the different steps of synthesis, as well as the feedstock and final product. Different performance parameters are presented and applied in the assessment of both processes and the most sustainable is recommended.

This work describes the statistical analysis carried out on studies of the synthesis of zeolites using fly ash (FA) and kaolinite and shows the main parameters in the hydrothermal synthesis of eight principal zeolites. The chosen zeolites were faujasite (zeolite X), zeolite A, zeolite P, hydroxysodalite, analcime, chabazite, hydroxycancrintie, and sodalite for FA and kaolinite. The statistical analysis consisted of analysis of variance (ANOVA) of the four principal parameters considered: temperature of synthesis, reaction time, Si/Al ratio of the FA and kaolinite and the solid/liquid ratio in the hydrothermal system. For the use of FA, zeolite P, zeolite X, and hydroxysodalite were the three principal synthesized zeolites in the majority of the studies while zeolite A, zeolite P, and sodalite where the three principal zeolites synthesized when kaolinite was used. In general terms, the use of FA required a low temperature and time of synthesis compared to the use of kaolinite. With regard to the Si/Al ratio, the values were similar in both cases, while the solid/liquid ratio for the use of FA was higher than that for kaolinite. Contrast analysis was carried out showing several differences in the synthesis of the eight types of analyzed zeolites.

This study deals with the synthesis of zeolite from natural kaolinite using hydrothermal treatment and evaluation of its phase transformation behaviors. The synthesized zeolites were modified with silver ion by using the ion exchange method for the enhancement of antibacterial properties. The characterizations were performed by using X-ray diffraction spectroscopy, Fouriertransform infrared spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray. Disk diffusion technique (DDT) was used for the evaluation of the antibacterial property of the modified zeolites. This study observed the transformation of kaolinite into amorphous metakaolin after calcination treatment at 900 C and the successful reconstruction of amorphous metakaolin into synthesized crystal zeolite in the presence of sodium hydroxide as an activating agent. It was also found that the zeolite type A was produced at 100 C, while sodalites were produced at 120 and 140 C. DDT analysis revealed that the modified zeolites showed significant antibacterial capability against Escherichia coli ATCC 11229 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538. In general, the present study has proven that the zeolites can be synthesized from natural material and can be modified with silver ion to enhance their antibacterial activity.
