“…Common ligands include surfactants such as oleylamine, dodecyldimethylammonium bromide, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide or chloride, octadecylamine and oleic acid [23,55,56]. Common polymers include polyethyleneimine (PEI), poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP), poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) [23,55,57]. Small molecules containing halides, small polymers and solvents are also used for coordination of specific crystal planes [55,58].…”

“… 41 One of the more successful solution-based strategies used to synthesize 1D structures of Fe 3 O 4 is the reduction of the iron oxy-hydroxide (FeOOH) polymorph. 17 , 18 , 42 , 43 However, a challenging aspect of this method is controlling the rod-shaped morphology of the final product due to aggregation and coalescence of the template. 17 , 44 Some reports have shown that when efforts were made to maintain the rod-shaped morphology, a mixture of iron oxides such as α-FeOOH, α-Fe 2 O 3 were formed along with Fe 3 O 4 .…”

“…Magnetite is one of the most attractive magnetic inorganic metal-oxides due to its biocompatibility, relatively high magnetic properties, and a wide range of synthetic procedures [91]. The main synthetic procedures include the co-precipitation [92,93], hydro-and solvothermal syntheses [94,95], reduction in template iron oxide with desired shape and size (for example, α-FeOOH, β-FeOOH, α-Fe 2 O 3 ) in wet (polyol reduction [96], hydrazine [97]) and dry reduction [98] (mixed atmosphere of Ar and H 2 ), and thermal decomposition of iron precursors [99].…”
