Synthesis of Carboxymethyl Starch with High Degree of Substitution by a Modified Dry Process

Abstract: Granular carboxymethyl starch (CMS) with high degree of substitution (DS) was synthesized using a modified dry process. The carboxymethylation reaction was carried out with granular potato starch, solid NaOH and sodium monochloroacetate (SMCA). The effects of reaction temperature, reaction time, molar ratio of NaOH and SMCA to starch on the degree of substitution (DS) and the reaction efficiency (RE) of CMS were investigated. High DS up to 0.78 was obtained for reaction at 323 K for 6 h with molar ratio of NaO… Show more

“…CMS aqueous solutions are non‐Newtonian liquids 28. Generally, higher substituted CMS gave aqueous solutions of higher viscosities than low substituted derivatives 11. This is possibly caused by higher density of negatively charged carboxymethyl groups and therefore greater electrostatic repulsion between high DS polysaccharide chains, molecules tended to exist in a more expanded state, resulting in higher viscosity value 4.…”

“…47 Highly substituted CMPS has higher viscosity than the low substituted one. 48 The electrostatic effect between polysaccharide chains with a high DS increases the viscosity by further widening the molecules. 47 It is also known that the viscosity of the polysaccharides depends on the molecular weight.…”

“…Carboxymethyl starch (CMS) is a kind of water‐soluble anionic etherified starch, and can be obtained by the etherification reaction of starch with chloroacetic acid in alkaline conditions . The introduced carboxyl group can provide starch with good solubility in water and improved mechanical properties by ways of increasing hydrophilicity of starch molecules and decreasing its structural regularity.…”
