Synthesis of a Photoresponsive Liquid‐Crystalline Polymer Containing Azobenzene

Abstract: The synthesis of an oriented liquid-crystalline photoresponsive polymer, prepared by polymerization of mono- and di-acrylates, both of which contain azobenzene chromophores, is reported. The prepared free-standing polymer film shows strong reversible photoinduced deformation upon exposure to unpolarized UV light at 366 nm, as a result of an optically induced isomeric change of the azobenzene moieties in the polymer network. The synthesis process is relatively simple and more efficient compared to conventional … Show more

“…One strategy for sensitizing LCEs to an external energy source is to modify them with stimuli-responsive organic functional groups, either by covalently attaching these to the polymeric chains [23,24] or by physically adsorbing them into swelling LCEs [25]. Several photo-responsive LCEs have been developed by introducing photochromic groups into the LCEs [26,27]. The majority of these photochromic molecules are azobenzene derivatives, although stilbene derivatives are also studied.…”

“…CuBr and CuCl are purified according to Xue et al (2002), 4-nitroaniline (98%) was bought from the Alfa Aesar (Tianji). Monomer 6-(4-(phenylazo) benzoate) hexyl methacrylate) (AzoMA) was synthesized according to Yu X. et al (2006), Yu H. et al (2008), and Li et al (2009). All solvents and other regents were purchased from the Sinopharm Chemical Reagent Co., Ltd., and were used as received.…”

“…By using this approach, several types of LCE have been synthesized. For instance, acrylate functionalized monomer mixed together with radical initiator (thermal/UV), using diacrylate as crosslinker, is employed to yield LCE [46,47,48,49]. Main chain LCEs, which utilize this synthetic approach, have been synthesized by polymerizing LC monomer (with vinyl and mercapto group) and multifunctional crosslinker (with two vinyl and mercapto groups) using a radical photo-initiator [50,51,52].…”
