Synthesis, crystal structure and physicochemical characterization of a Hg(II) complex with 6-methoxyquinoline as ligand

Abstract: A new complex of Hg(II) with 6-methoxyquinoline (C 10 H 9 NO-6MQ) has been synthesized and characterized. The structure of the complex Hg(6MQ)Cl 2 was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. It crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2 1 /c with a = 3.9139(3), b = 26.3400(2), c = 10.9090(9) Å, β = 89.833(6)°, V = 1124.6(1) Å 3 and Z = 4 molecules per unit cell. The coordination geometry of the mercury(II) center can be described as a distorted square pyramid formed by one nitrogen atom of the 6MQ a… Show more

“…6-Metoxiquinoline (6-MeOQ) can be found in the chemical structure of several antimalarial drugs 1 . This compound has been extensively studied regarding its photochemical behavior, and noteworthy singlet oxygen and fluorescence quantum yields have been reported [2][3][4][5][6] . Therefore, complexation of 6-MeOQ with transition metals could improve its photophysical properties and enhance its stability.…”

“…Therefore, complexation of 6-MeOQ with transition metals could improve its photophysical properties and enhance its stability. However, only some coordination compounds with this ligand have been reported 3,7,8 . The spectroscopic and thermogravimetric properties of Co(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexes were previously discussed, but their crystal structures were not determined 7 .…”

“…Moreover, Cu II , Ni II , Zn II , and Hg II complexes with 6‐methoxyquinoline (6MQ) as ligand were reported, but only the crystal structure of the compound containing mercury was discussed . With the aim of expanding the previously mentioned studies and to investigate the effect of different coordination geometries on the magnetic properties of Co II compounds, two ternary complexes of Co II with SDZ and 2,2′‐bipyridine (bpy) or 6MQ as ligands have been prepared, [Co(SDZ) 2 bpy] ( 1 ) and [Co(SDZ) 2 (6MQ) 2 ] ( 2 ).…”
