Single‐Ion Magnets Based on Mononuclear Cobalt(II) Complexes with Sulfadiazine

Abstract: The already reported monomeric complex Co(SDZ)2bpy (1) and the new ternary complex Co(SDZ)2(6MQ)2 (2) (SDZ = sulfadiazine, bpy = 2,2′‐bipyridine, and 6MQ = 6‐methoxyquinoline) have been synthesized in order to study their magnetic properties. X‐ray diffraction studies indicate that in both compounds the SDZ acts as a bidentate ligand coordinating through the sulfonamide and the pyrimidine N atoms giving rise to a CoN6 coordination sphere. The complexes have been characterized based on elemental analyses, FTIR,… Show more

“…Sulfonamide compounds are recognized for their biological properties [1][2][3][4][5][6] and their different coordination modes 5 . A wide variety of metal complexes with N-sulfonamides derivatives has also been studied for their polymer stabilization capacity 2 , magnetic behavior [7][8][9][10] , electrochemical properties 8,9,11 and luminescent emission 12,13 . Some complexes with sulfaquinoxaline (SQO) or sulfamethazine (SMT) as ligands (see Scheme 1) have been reported as effective chemotherapeutic agents.…”

“…As part of our ongoing research on the study of the structural and physicochemical properties of sulfonamides metal complexes 3,7,21,22 , we have previously reported the study in different models of biological systems in a ternary cobalt complex with sulfaquinoxaline and 2,2`-Bypirimidine as ligand 3 . Our goal herein is to extend these studies to other auxiliary ligands and metals with eventual biological properties.…”

“…Therefore, complexation of 6-MeOQ with transition metals could improve its photophysical properties and enhance its stability. However, only some coordination compounds with this ligand have been reported 3,7,8 . The spectroscopic and thermogravimetric properties of Co(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexes were previously discussed, but their crystal structures were not determined 7 .…”

“…26 More common scorpionate-like ligands often lead to trigonal antiprism (TAP) geometries, 27 where slow relaxation is only observed under an applied magnetic field. [28][29][30] A distortion from a TP towards a TAP geometry (Bailar twist) reduces further the SMM performance with respect to both ideal polyhedra. 31 It was even predicted 32 that at an angle ϕ of ca.…”
