Research has been conducted on the manufacture of PLA Coir Bentonite composites. This study aims to examine the effect of PLA on mechanical strength with the addition of coir and bentonite fillers from North Aceh and Central Aceh. The sample formulations used were single polymer PLA/Coir and PLA/Coir with variations of filler Bentonite Aceh Utara and Aceh Tengah with 2, 4, 6 and 8% respectively. The combination of PCa samples showed the highest bacterial colony growth rate, which was more than 100 colonies/gram during the 1 week testing period. In the PBATd filler mixture sample, the maximum bacterial test value was 65 colonies/gram and the minimum value contained in the PBAUa sample was 105 colonies/gram. The best tensile strength was obtained in the PBATc sample, namely 65 MPa. PBATd samples began to degrade at 370.15oC compared to PCa samples degraded at 280.21oC. While the PBAUa sample began to degrade at a temperature of 282.11oC. The surface structure of the PCa sample is more homogeneous because there is no bentonite filler mixture, but it is brittle and crumbles easily. For the PBATd sample, the surface structure is smoother and more homogeneous compared to the PBAUa sample.

The aim of this work is to improve the mechanical, thermal and water absorption properties of PLCHZ composites. The formation of the composites are mixing polylactic acid with zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO) and chitosan as filler. It produced through the precipitation method using a water bath under a temperature of 60 oC. Five prepared samples are pure PLA, PLCH, PLCHZa, PLCHZb and PLCHZc. The incorporating eﬀect of fillers on the properties of samples is investigated in terms of mechanical, thermal and water absorbtion test. The result showed that mechanical and thermal properties increased with the addition of ZnO nanoparticles compared to pure PLA and PLCH. Nevertheless, those properties increased up to 2 wt% of ZnO nanoparticles loading but decreased when it content is increased up to 3 wt% and 4 wt%. PLCHZa with the smallest content of 2 wt% ZnO nanoparticles showed the highest value of 15 MPa in tensile strength and 330.6 oC in thermal resistant. In water absorbtion test, PLCHZc with 4 wt% ZnO has better absorb ability as well as the lowest percentage absorption rate of 0.02% to 0.03%. It can be conclude that ZnO nanoparticles play an important role in the main properties of polymer composites.

Geraniol quality improvement on citronella oil as raw material for making anti-bacterial perfumes

In this study, optimization was carried out to increase the levels of geraniol compounds present in citronella oil using vacuum distillation. Geraniol is a compound that has been legalized by IFRA (Fragrance International Research Association) as a scent compound, Geraniol has been studied in addition to having a pleasant fragrance, geraniol is also very effective in inhibiting bacterial growth. So geraniol is a reference to use it as formulated as a raw material for anti-bacterial products, but the levels of geraniol in citronella oil are still very low. This is what encourages the processing of fragrant citronella oil to be processed, by increasing geraniol levels using a vacuum distillation method, with variations in pressure: 8mmHg, 6mmHg, 4mmHg, 1mmHg during the operating time: 20 minutes; 40 minutes; 60 minutes and until Final boiling point. The samples were analysed using GC-MS (Gas Chromatography of Mass Spectrometry, FTIR (Fourier Transform Infra-Red Spectrophotometer), refractive index, and bacterial testing of research products. The results showed that higher temperature usage had an effect on increasing geraniol levels and showed that This vacuum distillation method is quite effective. Geraniol concentrations before and after isolation increased by 38%. namely from 20.32% to 57.39%. This shows that this method is quite effective in increasing geraniol concentrations in fragrant citronella oil. Analysis of FTIR shows 3365.78 cm-1 according to the hydroxyl polymer group (OH).
