Synthesis, Characterization and Antioxidant Activity of Cooper-Quercetin Complex and Iron-Quercetin Complex

Abstract: Complexes of cooper (II) and iron (II) with flavonoid quercetin have been synthesized. The structure of compounds has been confirmed by means of UV-Vis and FTIR spectroscopic techniques. The antioxidant activity of the flavonoid complexes has been evaluated by using the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging method. These complexes of flavonoids are much more effective free radical scavengers than the free flavonoids, an aspect which recommends them for further studies on possible therapeutic … Show more

“…Normally, plants synthesize them as a protection mechanism to environmental attack (microbial infection, UV exposure). Over the years, the flavonoids were found to play an important role on the human health due to their antimicrobial, antioxidant, antiinflammatory and anticancer properties [8][9][10][11][12].…”

“…The increased interest in the replacement of synthetic antioxidants from food with the natural ones has supported the search of plant sources and the choice of raw materials for new antioxidants identification. Because, until now, about 10000 flavonoids have been recorded [9], the researchers have focused their work on finding relationships between flavonoids structure and their *email: mirel_glevitzky@yahoo.com; gabriela.cioca@ulbsibiu.ro All the authors have equal contribution at this original article.…”

“…The higher biological activity of metal complexes compared with ligand was reported by other authors as well. For example, Co(II), Cd(II), and Cu(II) complexes of quercetin showed a greater ability to inhibit DPPH • radical than the pure ligand [91,92]. Complexation with Mg(II) ions increased the hypoglycemic and antibacterial activity compared to luteolin alone, especially against E. coli [50].…”

“…Antioxidant activity test by DPPH method was performed according to a previous method used by others [21][22][23][30][31][32]. Briefly, the compounds to be tested were dissolved in methanol at concentrations of 2; 4; 8; 16, and 32 μM.…”

“…In this study, we aimed to determine the chemical reactivity of the organotin(IV) carboxylate compounds diphenyltin(IV) di-4-aminobenzoate and triphenyltin(IV) 4-aminobenzoate by using cyclic volta-mmetry. We also examined the antioxidant properties of these compounds using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method using a similar procedure applied by others [30][31][32].…”
