Synthesis, Characterization and Antimicrobial Activity of d8-10 MetalComplexes of some 2‐Substituted‐1H‐Benzimidazoles

Abstract: The metal complexes of nine 2-substituted-1H-benzimidazoles (I-IX) with Ni(II), Pd(II), Cu(II), Ag(I), Zn(II) salts were synthesized. The compounds were characterized by melting point, analytical data, IR spectroscopy and magnetic susceptibility. The antimicrobial activity of the compounds was determined by the disk diffusion method in Mueller-Hinton Agar on Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538, Staphylococcus epidermidis ATCC 12228, Escherichia coli ATCC 8739, Klebsiella pneumoniae ATCC 4352, Pseudomonas aeruginos… Show more

“…Coordination compounds of benzimidazole derivatives with transition metal ions have been used to prepare structural and spectroscopic models of the active sites of some metalloenzymes [18], but the investigation concerned with their biological activity has been limited to thiabendazole coordination compounds with Co(II), Cu(II), Ni(II) and Zn(II) [6,19] and 2-substituted pyridinyl derivatives of Fe(III), Co(II), Zn(II), Ag(I) and Hg(II) [20][21][22].…”

“…For example, the bis(diphosphine)silver(I) complexes (which are analogues of the bis(diphosphine)gold(I) complexes with promising antitumor activity compromised by their antimitochondrial activity) were examined for antitumor and antimicrobial activity by Berners-Price et al 73 2-Substituted benzimidazole derivatives of silver(I) are more effective than the copper analogues against Staphylococcus aureus (MIC = 9.8 vs 78 and 9.8 vs 156 µg mL −1 ) when the substituents are 2-pyridyl and 5-methyl-2-pyridyl. 74 These and two related complexes showed similar MIC values (9.8 to 39 µg mL −1 ) against a panel of 7 additional infectious agents including P. aeruginosa and Candida albicans. Five sulfacetamide silver derivatives, which introduce two sulfonamide linkages, were tested against two Aspergillus species (niger and flavus) and C. albicans.…”

“…The originality of this complex resides from the presence of 2-propylimidazole as ligand, similar complexes being reported rarely in the past. [20] A literature survey shows that benzimidazole/ benzimidazole derivatives and their complexes present antimicrobial, antiviral, antidiabetic, anticancer activities, [21,22] superoxide dismutase mimetic activity [23] and catalytic activity. [24] A nickel coordination polymer {Ni(1,4-bib) 1.5 (TPA-Cl 2 )·H 2 O} n , where 1,4-bib = 1,4-bis(1H-imidazol-1-yl)benzene, H 2 TPA-Cl 2 = 2,5-dichloro-terephtalic acid, presents beneficial applications: luminiscent sensor for Fe 3+ ions detection in aqueous solution, electrochemical sensor for nitrite ions detection and photocatalyst for degradation of organic dyes contaminants.…”
