The complexes of 2-substituted-1,3-diphenyl-1,3-propanedione with copper(II) ion and their 2,2′-bipyridine and 1,10-phenanthroline adducts were synthesised and characterised by microanalysis, conductance, magnetic and spectral measurements. The conductance data showed that [Cu(dbm)(phen)](dbm) and [Cu(Me-dbm)(phen)](Me-dbm) are 1:1 electrolytes. The infrared spectra revealed the different shifts of the carbonyl frequency. While the electronic solid reflectance spectra of the prepared complexes exhibited three peaks with varying λ max between 12,121-21,505 cm-1 , the adducts displayed single bands in the visible region between 13,553-14,698 cm-1 except for [Cu(dbm)(phen)](dbm) and [Cu(Me-dbm)(phen)](Me-dbm) with additional two peaks. These peaks have been assigned as d-d transitions. Using Density Functional Theory (DFT) and Semi-empirical PM3, the modeled compound showed a distorted five coordinate square pyramidal geometry.

The nickel(II) and copper(II) complexes of 2-substituted-1-phenyl-1,3-butanedione (2-R-bzacH, R=Cl, NO2) and
their 2,2′-bipyridine (bipy) and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) adducts have been synthesized and characterized by
microanalysis, conductance, magnetic and spectral measurements. The conductivity measurements in nitromethane
indicate that the complexes are non-electrolytes while all the adducts are electrolytes except Ni(NO2-bzac)2bipy and
Cu(NO2-bzac)2phen which are non-electrolytes. The room temperature magnetic moments suggest that the
Cu(NO2-bzac)2 is a dimer while the visible absorption spectra of the compounds suggest plausible 4-, 5- and
6-coordinate geometry for these compounds. The infrared spectra of the complexes showed that lower frequency
shifts of varying magnitudes were observed in the carbonyl stretching frequencies on complexation.

A new ligand namely 3-hydroxybenzaldehyde-4-nitrobenzoic acid hydrazone, its Nickel(II) and Copper(II) complexes were synthesised and characterised by spectroscopic methods: 1 H NMR, Infrared (IR), UV-Vis, magnetic susceptibility measurement and % metal analysis. 1 H NMR spectroscopy showed the diagnostic N-H signal at 12.10 ppm indicating the formation of the ligand. Infrared spectra showed that the ligand coordinated to the metal ion in keto form through the carbonyl oxygen (C=O) and the azomethine nitrogen (C=N). The UV-Vis spectrum of the ligand displayed two prominent bands at 47169 cm-1 and 30303 cm-1 which were ascribed to the intraligand transitions of π-π*, and n-π* respectively. These bands had hypsochromic shifts in the metal complexes indicating coordination with the metal ion. The nickel complex had a magnetic moment of 2.92 B.M, suggesting an octahedral geometry, while the copper complex had a value of 1.65 B.M. which is close to the expected value for a d 9 copper(II) complex with possibility antiferromagnetic interactions. The % metal calculated had a good agreement with the observed values. The acetylcholinesterase inhibition activity of the ligand measured was 190 ± 20 µg/mL compared to the standard Eserin that had 68 ± 1.13 µg/mL. The copper(II) complex had a value of 220 ± 20 µg/mL, while the Nickel(II) complex had the least inhibitory value at 390 ± 80 µg/mL. The compounds could serve as primary target in the study of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors
