Synthesis and Physicochemical Studies of Some 2-substituted-1-phenyl-1,3-butanedionato Nickel(II) and Copper(II) Complexes And Their 2,2?-Bipyridine and 1,10-Phenanthroline Adducts

Abstract:

The nickel(II) and copper(II) complexes of 2-substituted-1-phenyl-1,3-butanedione (2-R-bzacH, R=Cl, NO2) and
their 2,2′-bipyridine (bipy) and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) adducts have been synthesized and characterized by
microanalysis, conductance, magnetic and spectral measurements. The conductivity measurements in nitromethane
indicate that the complexes are non-electrolytes while all the adducts are electrolytes except Ni(NO2-bzac)2bipy and
Cu(NO2-bzac)2phen which are non-electro… Show more

“…The room temperature magnetic moment for copper(II) complexes species with S = ½ usually observed for magnetically dilute copper(II) complexes is in the range 1.70 -2.20 B. M (Chung et al, 1999;Omoregie and Woods, 2011;Shebl et al, 2014). A moment in the range 1.71 -2.43 B. M. was observed in the copper(II) complexes which agrees with the values expected for monomeric, and magnetically dilute octahedral copper(II) complexes (Nakamoto, 1997.;Alhadi et al, 2012).…”

“…Furthermore, it was observed that dimeric 1 complex Cu (L ) Cl had a moment of 2.90 B. M. This high value compared with the expected spin only value of 1.70 B.M for copper(II) is as a result of strong ferromagnetic coupling interaction between the two copper centres. This fact suggested that the chloro atoms are in a bridging mode between the dimeric Cu(II) complexes (Lakshmi et al, 2011;Omoregie. and Woods, 2011).…”

“…1-Phenyl-1,3-butanedione is a flavouring and fragrance agent with a balsamic odour used in foods requiring a balsamic, amber, heather, oriental, or vanilla taste. Nickel(II) and copper(II) complexes of 2-substituted-1-phenyl-1,3-butanedione (R = Cl, NO 2 ) and their 2,2′-bipyridine and 1,10-phenanthroline adducts have been reported [9]. Metal coordination complexes have been widely studied for their antimicrobial and anticancer properties [10].…”

“…These shifted to 1608-1620 cm -1 in the [Ni(tta)(N-N)NO 3 )] complexes indicating the coordination of ligand to the metal. The shift in the [Ni(β-diketone) 2 en] series as compared to the ligands (Woods et al, 2009;Omoregie, 2012;Omoregie and Woods, 2011) is also an indication of coordination. Studies have revealed that ionic nitrate bands are categorized as ν 1 = 1050 cm -1 (N-O stretch, infrared-inactive), v 2 = 831 cm -1 (NO, deformation), v 3 = 1390 cm -1 (NO, asymmetric stretch), and v4 = 720 cm -1 (planar rock) (Gatehouse et al, 1957;Wheeler and Walmsley, 1986).…”
