Synthesis and Diameter-dependent Thermal Conductivity of InAs Nanowires

Abstract: In this work, we synthesized high-quality InAs nanowires by a convenient chemical vapor deposition method, and developed a simple laser heating method to measure the thermal conductivity of a single InAs nanowire in air. During the measurement, a focused laser was used to heat one end of a freely suspended nanowire, with its other end embedded into a carbon conductive adhesive. In order to obtain the thermal conductivity of InAs nanowires, the heat loss in the heat transfer process was estimated, which include… Show more

“…In the last decade, nanotechnology has entered every aspect of our life and attracts attention due to its rapidly wide-spreading applications. 1,2 The reason for this popularity, at the nanoscale values, the quantum physics laws take place the traditional laws of physics. Consequently, the physical, chemical, and biological features of matter such as conductivity, reactivity, elasticity, hardness, color, temperature and pressure resistance, toxicity, and biocompatibility are affected by this change.…”

“…113 There are numerous reports in the literature establishing that k of nanowires decreases with smaller diameter. This has been observed in various nanowire materials platforms produced by various growth methods, for example Si, [114][115][116] InAs, [117][118][119] ZnO, 120 Ge/GeSi core-shell, 121 Si/SiGe superlattice, 122 and InSb 123 . Here we will briefly highlight some points regarding the k in nanowires.…”

“…Tuning phonon properties and heat conduction via phonon engineering has been demonstrated in NWs consisting of different materials, shapes, geometries and composition. The influence of diameter of NWs on the phonon thermal conductivity at room temperature has been thoroughly investigated in previous studies [ 45 , 46 , 47 , 48 ]. In these experiments, classical size effects were dominant and the thermal conductivity of the NWs was found to be suppressed by almost two orders of magnitude compared to their bulk counterparts, mainly due to the increased phonon boundary scattering.…”
