Synthesis and characterization of biocompatible tigecycline imbibed electrospun poly ε-caprolactone urethane urea fibers

Abstract: Polyester urethane urea fibers were immersed in a broad spectrum glycylcycline antibiotic (tigecycline) and characterized for the treatment of infected wounds.

“…Ampicillin and cefepime were loaded in polyacrylic acid and graphene-oxide crosslinked mesh, which exhibited no-inflammatory response at S. aureus infected superficial wound (Altinbasak et al, 2018). There are other wound healing mesh scaffolds (i.e., poly-3-caprolactone urethane, cellulose-PVA, and N-maleoyl chitosan) were explored to supply different kinds of antibiotics such as tigecycline, gentamicin sulfate, and tetracycline hydrochloride to eliminate pathogens from the wound bed (Sabitha & Rajiv, 2015). Vancomycin eluting poly[lactic-co-glycol acid] (PLGA) mesh showed prolonged 8 weeks antibiotic release after implantation at the brain tissue (Tseng et al, 2013).…”

“…Sabitha and Rajiv applied a different approach to include drugs into electrospun fibers by facilitating imbibition of tigecycline in PCL urethane urea microfibers. 121 This was performed by immersing the fibers in a tigecycline solution. The diameter of the fibers was 1.5-2 µm after drug imbibition has taken place.…”

“…Aromatic diisocyanates prepared polyurethane of better mechanical properties; however, the aromatic diisocyanates degrade in vivo to carcinogenic aromatic diamines . Therefore, aliphatic diisocyanates are usually used in the synthesis of polyurethane scaffolds or polyurethane biomaterials . The hard segments of the polyurethane material synthesized from aliphatic diisocyanate (1,4‐diisocyanate butane and lysine methyl ester diisocyanate) had been modified similar to methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI)‐based polyurethane by incorporating diurea diol chain extenders that were synthesized from amino acid derivatives (TyA and Tyr) with polyethylene glycol (the polyols) .…”
