Synoviorthesis with radioactive Yttrium in haemophilia: Israel experience

Abstract: Radioactive Yttrium-90 (90Y) was injected into 163 joints. Of these patients 115 were persons with haemophilia and they suffered from recurrent haemarthroses. The median age at the time of the initial exposure to 90Y was between 11 and 15 years and the median follow-up period 11 years. Over 80% of the patients with haemophilia reported a decrease in the number of haemarthroses and 15% stopped bleeding altogether in the treated articulation. The safety of this modality of management has been reported and hence … Show more

“…Duration of improvement pattern is not the same in different individuals, and in some patients the considerable initial drop in bleeding rate changes, and increases over the years [13,20]. The observations in this study also show that the percentage of cases with no bleeding episode after 32 P injection tends to decrease, especially during the early 6‐month postinjection (39% at third month to 26% at sixth month).…”

“…Heim et al studied radiosynoviorthesis in 115 patients with hemophilia with concomitant intraarticular steroid injections and supported the idea that the aim of steroid administration was to reduce the postradiation inflammatory response and to ensure that the needle tract remains free of radioactive material. 21 They did not report the leakage values.…”

“…Takiplerinde ortalama kanama sıklığı ayda dörtten yılda ikiye düşmüş. Radyosinovektominin, hemofilik hastaların uzun dönem takiplerde %15 oranında kanamayı durdurduğu ve %80 oranında kanama sayısını azalttığı rapor edilmiştir (12,13).…”
